On the Shimano Curado..... there are a few versions out there now..... The "Greenie" has been rebranded as a Muskie reel (Curado E) - I think these were the ones that got them the positive reputation they have. They did a redesign that got bad marks, and now redesigned again (Curado I) to a reel getting good reviews. I purchased on this winter - has a 5.3(?) ratio which I thought might be good to have a little more power for striper - but its surprising to me how much slower it retrieves vs the 6.x ratio. Tolerable but I like a bit more speed. I think I caught one fish jigging on it this winter - got it around the Meet & Greet and with the frozen Feb we had I didn't get to use it.... time to throw some top-water or shallow plugs with it now however.
Don't get me wrong - its a quality reel and very smooth - and it may actually help be crank those Thundersticks as slow as they need to be - so it will be good in the long-run......

What rod length are you all using? I was thinking 7' plus maybe even 7-10" for the distance. Most of those are MH to H.

I use 7 footers because of storage issue and you still get good casting range. If you go longer you might consider a 2 piece rod. The price ranges on some of the reels mentioned (dependent on model) Calcuttas 250-400 or higher Chronarch us 180-300 Curado 130-200 Abu Garcia 100-350 But get a midrange like most have said-you get what you pay for.

For topwater/thundersticks I think 7' would be good. MH should be a good all around option at this point but one of each would be good if you can swing it. Look at the Falcon rods at Wally World. Decent product for the $$.

Saw these two in Cabelas ad today. The Quantum reel is basically $100 off. Anybody use these? Attachments:

That smoke is a nice reel. Really both are. Look at gear ratios. 5.4 for deep cranks and or 6.3 for a universal option.

The questions I would have is... are you going to be using it for bass fishing or striper fishing??? casting or bait fishing? line capacity and what lb. test the reel is rated and what I would be using it for would play a role for me........ different reels have different purposes....no way I would use a smaller dinky bass baitcaster for live bait fishing for stripers......

I would definitly recommend Shimano, as they are great reels, regardless of their cost category. Their magnetic spool breaking is outstanding which will really help reduce backlashes, and their drag systems are as smooth as it gets. I have Shimano's I have been using for over 30 years and have not had one disappoint me yet. I've been using baitcasters for over 40 years, and still get a backlash every now and then, so no reel is backlash free.
