I had a buddy go up there this past summer to a place I turned him on to where we fished for King Salmon in July. I don't fly fish but we used big balls of salmon eggs. Biggest I had ever caught up there was 36 1/2 lbs, it's on my wall. Typical, I lost a really big one that grows every time I tell the story. Started out at about 50 and is now at 67lbs. LOL I had seen guys up and down river fly fishing. My friend with me caught a 69 lber. He goes up with two buddies, stayed in a nearby B&B owned by some friends of mine and they had a blast. He said he caught many kings biggest being 54 lbs. On a fly rod! He said it took him and hour and 40 minutes to land! I'm looking to return next summer with my son while I'm healthy enough to do so. Any of you guys want some info on a great fishing trip drop me a pm. Oh it's not guided but I can give you places to stay, where to fish etc etc. You would fly into Anchorage and drive the rest of the trip, about 6 hours.

I would love to make a trip like that but what about the bears?
I have been there twice out of Anchorage and up to Fairbanks but it was in the winter time and the river was about frozen over.

Try Lake Ontario if you want to catch king salmon. It's a bit closer than AK from what I hear.

We did have a bear way down stream of us be he never came near. We were casting salmon eggs upstream and they pick them up you set the hook. Then it is off to the races. You are fishing an 8 knot river and when a big salmon heads down stream you can hear your line singing in the water. They make runs of 150 to 200 yds. Awesome. I have fished salmon in lake ontario but its deep downrigger trolling like 250ft deep. I found it to be slow and boring but thats just me.

Toys, I traveled all over AK during my working years, so I'm very familiar with the ins and outs of fishing and hunting up there. The guided trips are nice but very expensive. I paid 5K for a King Salmon 5 day trip years ago. Then after getting to know the locals I learned where they go to fish. I've made a couple trips up there on my own and the biggest expense is the plane fare and B&B costs. I caught more fish unguided then I did with guides. I was just letting anyone know if they want to go up there I'm more then willing to provide all the info they need. Not and advertisement just a friendly fisherman. A good friend of mine from Seattle goes up Pink Salmon fishing and combines that with a Caribou hunt. Something I want to do before my bucket kicks over as well. I am hoping my health stays good long enough to make a trip with my son and grand kids. Cheers

Sorry you are having health problems. I am just getting over Lyme disease. I was bitten by a tick the end of August and waited too long to see a doctor. Most of the experienced doctors have retired or won't take Medicare payments due to the low reimbursements. So what I found was a bunch of inexperienced doctors that were here on a work visa. My left leg swelled up 1 1/2 normal size from the kneecap to my foot. While the doctor gave me antibiotics, it was only for 3 weeks when it should have been for a longer period since I was in the later stage of Lyme disease. They then sent me to a specialists that was out to lunch. I ended up ordering a book and treating myself using nutritional supplements. The best source of health information is the Life Extension Foundation...LEF.ORG...which is based in FL and consists of a non-profit organization of MD's that do research and review medical research reports. I get a full blood test every year for $200 which would costs me $1100 if I walked into Lab Corp uninsured. LEF also sells nutritional supplements. Their membership is $75 a year but you get credit for that amount towards purchasing their supplements. You can find a lot of good information on health by searching their website. If you got your health, you have everything. Prevention is the key. link

Striperjohn, If that trip ever comes in line for me I will make sure to hit you up. I had often considered doing an all in trip through someplace like whalers cove or somthing along those lines. But like you said it is very expensive. I've had the opportunity to travel all over this country and fish in some of it, Alaska is the only state I have yet to been to.

Sounds good. Just let me know. I can show you where you can talk to and see pictures of a 4'10" lady that killed a 13'5" Grizzly with a pistol. She has pictures of it all over her place. She had killed a Caribou and was field dressing it when the bear charged her. She shot it 6 time in the throat with a 44 magnum. When it fell is claws ripped her clothing straight off her from her bra, Tshirt, shirt, coat, and pants belt.. She had one small cut on one breast. LOL She said she was standing their almost naked when her husband came running over the hill to her. LOL She runs a restaurant in the town of Glennallen, AK. On the way up you can stop at a small lake off the road maybe 50 yards where 90% of your casts (Shyster rainbow colored) you'll land a 4-15lb trout. Lots of great places and people to see and talk to up there. I'd be living there if I could convince my better half to go. People there are simply down to earth, take no crap and give none. Just want to be left alone to do their thing. L Cheers, John

I went in 89 and it was great fishing! We rented a motor home and drove down the Kenai Peninsula. We have been talking about going back with my 12 yr old son. Would love to get some info on your trip. We flew on a float plane to a remote river and were dropped off to fish on one day. I walked down a trail and a bear growled at me from about 10 yds away in the thick brush. I remember the guide telling us before he left(with his 12 ga sawed off double barrel shotgun that he never set down while we unloaded), that if we saw a bear, not to run because they would chase you. I, of course, hauled a$$ down the trail. When the others returned, I was still standing in the middle of the river!

I have a good friend who has been fishing with my group in Canada for the last 35 years who wants to do a salmon trip to AK. I have been talking with him about putting a group together for summer 2016, its a little late for this next summer. If you are interested pm me and perhaps we can get together. We get much better rates on guided and unguided trips when we take a good group. Pic of my 36.5 I caught. Attached I hope. Lol Sent from my SM-G900R4 using proboards Attachments:
