Well, we got one.
"We" being the royal We, and since it was caught on my boat, I am claiming some small contribution. For those of you who are keeping score here, since I have started fishing with this guy, the fly rod caught fish score is as follows:
Me:
Striped Bass landed: 0
Striped Bass hooked: 1
Bass landed: .5 (it was ridiculously small)
Bass hooked: somewhere between 1 and 100. I'm not telling you which.
Him:
Striped bass landed: Average of 1/trip
Striped bass hooked: Roughly 1 additional per trip
Bass hooked/landed: I really don't want to talk about this anymore.
Personally, I find his behavior very rude, but he's an otherwise nice guy, so I'm letting it slide. I've been on this HORRIFIC streak of bad luck for about a year now and I keep waiting to for it to end, but it has been rather persistent. Prior to this past year, I could hold my own with a fly rod against anyone using any other artificial lure. Lately, I'm just happy for the occasional snag on the bottom to give me that rush of SOMETHING happening.
Anywho, we fished up river on the Roanoke side and found the striper gorging themselves on shad. It was actually rather obnoxious, they were literally wallowing in the bait, slurping it off the top, rolling out of the water, and generally making pigs of themselves. OUR fish was caught within the first 30 minutes of being out there on a sinking fly line with a floating fly. After that, we managed a sum total of ZERO bites and significantly stronger arm muscles. I will admit that, in a moment of weakness, after having snagged a peanut shad, to squishing it in my hand and rubbing all over my fly. When surrounded by feeding fish in all directions, even the most morally upright fly fisherman can be reduced to a level of moral depravity that he would normally not consider.
It didn't work worth a damn, either.
