Clearly this cant be typical. Went fishing with my son sunday afternoon. It got warm and he wanted to jump of the rock upstream from mormans, but didnt want to do it if I couldnt join him. Too crazy to anchor the boat so I figured I would just use my trolling motor remote to keep the boat nearby. I jumped in with the copilot remote around my neck, swam to the rock and clumsily straggled my out of shape overweight pile of flesh up onto the rock (ugly sight). Anywho, boat was already drifting so i hit the remote and the motor came to life. I turned it and suddenly it starts acting wierd. Sure enough, it stopped working 3 seconds later. Now the remote is dead. $50 and the thing isnt waterproof? Is it just me or is that just plain idiotic?

I would say it's water resistant but not "water proof." Take it apart and dry it out and it should be fine.

I hate water resistant, every thing should be water proof.

There is no rubber seal between the plastic housings.

Let's just say there was a whale sighting in the vicinity and it weren't no striper. . . . Alls well in the end. Covered by warranty and got to give props to SML marine electronics - delivered my replacement to Roanoke and I am back in business. Says waterproof all over the packaging and website, apparently I had a defective one or missed the fine print that said "waterproof to 6 feet above the nearest source of wetness".

No way that things waterproof. I've been through a few and water and/or saltwater was always the culprit.

The iPilot remote is (supposed) to be "watertight" and float - I've tested the floating on a controlled setting really quick. However the 1st genertation iPilot remote (the bigger - more rubbery one) would eventually start to leak around the seal and let some water in - foggy up the display, etc. We'll see how well the newer style (hard plastic) one works - but not diving into the lake with it as a test

Used to be a big ole muskie that hung out next to that rock, don't know if he's still there or not.
