My little guy (5) has started showing SERIOUS interest in fishing. We‘ve been tearing up the bream and warmouth and I would LOVE to get him into a school of crappie. I have a boat and good electronics (no sidescan though) but know nothing about crappie except those I catch by accident. Any tips for this time of year? What am I looking for in terms of water - depth, structure, etc, and what am i looking for on my fishfinder?
Appreciate the tips, would love to watch his face when he catches his first one!

I would try there now, and trees out in the main channel that are down on some of the steeper banks.

A long way..... those locations are on the upper Roanoke.... R78/80 and R76A respectively. But I'm sure there are good locations for crappie on that side of the lake as well - I can't help you with crappie at all other than when I catch them in the cast-net and let them go.....

Look for trees down from the bank into the lake, look at the steep banks where the trees are a little deeper, might also check out the cliff areas.

Any luck on the crappie? I'm headed to SML on Thursday and Friday to try a little bit of everything. Would love to catch a few nice thick crappie. Back in the early 90's, I used to catch them this time of year under piers on the main channel and also back in a cove about 20' deep. I also caught quite a few smallmouth back in that cove fishing 20' deep. TW
