Greetings, Search isnt working for me right now. I was curious about top water rod suggestions in the $80 or less category. Looking at throwing plugs, poppers, and redfins at times. Im using strictly spinning reels right now. Kind of confused about what Im reading. Some say get a longer setup but that seems to be more "surf" fishing. Would love input.

If you're looking for recommendations on spinning reels, I like my Pfleguer President spinning reels - I have the 6740 (older model - think the current one may be 6840 or newer). For baitcasters, lots of options and opinions there too I'm sure.... I have one of the lower-end Lew's reels - SpeedSpool which runs $99 list - have used it with A-rigs and like it..... hear lots of good things on the Lew's BB1 but its more $$$.

I picked up a couple of the Gander GSX spinning rod and reel combos for under a hundred bucks for the folks that can't cast a baitcaster. Not a bad outfit for the money. As for me, I have a couple of old calcutta 50's on 7' G-Loomis custom rods I use for top water, jigging and crankbaits. Will PM you the Gander details.

Piper, I like a good 7'to 7.5' fiberglass med-hvy rod for topwater action. I fish mainly lakes. The length gives me the leverage to get nice long casts out. My #1 choice is the Abu Garcia Veritas (casting, but they make a spinning as well.) They are $100 but Gander just had a sale for $80. I would use this setup for bass fishing as well. I also like the Skeet Reese rods because they are good quality, long range rods and have a better price tag than the Veritas.

Fiberglass rods are coming back into the scene more and more for crank baits. Abu Garcia Veritas and Skeet Reese rods are graphite rods not glass rods. The Abu Garcia Veritas is a popular rod and good for the money. Every Skeet Reese rod ive looked at the last 6 months had some QC issues and had heard a couple of months ago they were going to be made by a different company due to this. For a little more than the $80 range go see Dwayne at Captains Quarters and take a look at the Duckett rods he just got in. I think he had them priced at $99. For the money they are some of the nicest off the shelf rods out there in my opinion. As for length the longer the rod the longer the cast. Probably why you think of longer rods as surf rods since the surf fisherman need to get long cast to get out to the deeper water. 7' - 7'6" is what is normally used for most applications.

Funny you say Duckett. I was actually going to check those out at basspro in myrtle beach this weekend. If Dwayne has em I'll support him as Basspro is the same price. Thanks!

Shimano Crucial...over the price you listed, but definitely worth the extra. Their warranty service is absolutely the best. Ahhh, kinda broke the tip in a very unusual way.. (will not post how) no, not that way! Called them to buy a replacement tip and was told to just brake it in pieces, ship it to them and they would send me a new one. They did! If you are set on staying under said price, go with an ugly stik, chaep and strong!

Second the Shimano Crucial..or the Teramar. If anything ever goes wrong, they will replace for free. Couple them with Shimano Stradic reels and you will be loving life.
Get the extra fast tip.

Some of the WalMart stores recently got in some Catfish Ugly Sticks. I picked up one of the medium heavy eight foot rods to try out for $40. I have always liked the fiberglass rods and have a bunch of the Berkley Parametric rods from the old days. They haven't been made for a long time but you can find them on ebay. Most of them are too light for Stripers but are OK for bass, etc I use to buy a lot of stuff from W & W Novelty in Lynchburg. I haven't been in their store since 1974 and am surprised that they are still around. Has anyone shopped there recently? link
