I'd put it on a timer - if its just a spotlight I don't know that burning it all day would help that much and the cycling would not impact the bulb a lot like it would no a high intensity halogen type bulb......

Went down for bait last night, Under the spots there was bait that had come up to the lights but there was nothing under the Halogen light. I think the bait can see the spots better when they are down deep and respond to that. During the warmer months the bait will be around both. I have tried Flood lights and feel that spots do a better job.. OH it's about 18 feet off the end of the dock hope this helps.

"Think a flood light off the end dock at the station would bring in any bait? Thinking about putting one there for next year, since I will have the boat and a camper down there next year."
I sure think it will. Did it again last night. Turned on the halogen slip light at 5pm, went back down at 6pm, one throw with a crappy 5' net captured dozens of alewives. Big ones too. The slip is in about 7 foot of water as of last night (AEP really drained the lake over the last couple of days).
I kept about 10 alewives and threw the rest back because I'm having trouble keeping them alive.

As for which light to put out asked from the original question. Depending on the depths around your dock, I would put a double spot off of one corner and a submerge a hydra glow on the other. Depending on time of year I've had better success on each different one. Some times of year I've been able to load up on one throw on docks with a hydra glow and some times of the year nothing on the same dock. Same goes with the flood lights.

FYI - I moved the alewife keeping discussion to the Live Bait thread.....

Most likely will be spots, two on each piling at the end of the dock, will most likely use dusk to dawn timer as it is easier and you don't have to turn it on each time you need bait. Can be changed if I need to. How high should it be off the water?

Experiment with one light or two on the two pilings - having a light on each if two pilings may actually spread the bait and make it not as easy to catch. Just need to experiment - one light might actually be better than two spread apart.

Once I get my health problem fixed and get back down there I'll get a light and some wire and run it out to the end and try can always move it as needed once its up. thinking about three to four feet up from the water so it will be out of the way of docking it we have to use the dock for that, try not cause boats take a beating out there.
