Well I am in an interesting situation and thought I would throw it out there for conversational fodder amongst the crowd. Many of you know my house is for sale in NC and I have been planning on moving back to the lake area when it sells but in the current market and what I need to get for the house it is taking a while (that was entirely expected). What many of you don't know is that my lovely bride doesn't share my patience in her desire to relocate from the current area where we live and would like to leave, let's just say...before now.
So I have a dilemna that is really not a dilemna at all but I can move anywhere I want to in NC or VA on a temporary, interim or permanent basis. Chances are this will not be my primary residence (we are kicking around a small 2 BR beach bungalow on the outer banks) and will be used as a getaway. I have to sell my current house to buy a new primary residence because I can't afford 2 homes like that. So all of that being said, for the money and for the fishing/seafood, where would you recommend moving if you could go anywhere in those 2 states? I am thinking this could be like a 2 year vacation so I want to make the most of it.

Kiptopeake, but make it a 3-bedroom - I need a place to stay on the weekends in December

Hell no to Kiptopeke. I'd kill myself living there. The fishing is awesome..rest of it is miserable beyond a week or two vacation.

Rent tent space in my backyard for an outrageous rate that I can take and use to buy myself a bungalow on the outer banks.

Personally I would draw a line across Interstate 64 and stay south of that line. What kind of area are you (her) looking for. Within the two state area you can choose to be in the middle of everything or out in the sticks. There are several areas around here where industry has shipped across the water and you can buy/rent a whole lot for a little. Don't you still have a key to a houseboat?

Honestly, I would buy on Claytor Lake. It is the most beautiful lake in the state with the most freshwater opportunities nearby. It is not overly populated and the water is some of the cleanest lake water in the state.

Hey all thanks for the replies...I agree with the south of 64! The only exception for me would be Bath county west of 81 but our primary residence will likely be somewhere around the lake up to Lexington or maybe Staunton so I will have my western VA fix there. We are really focused around the salt for this one and I like the idea of being able to have a place at both. The options we are thinking are the eastern shore down thru all of NC on the coast. I am more of a Hatteras type (less people) and we definately don't want to be in the population centers but would like to be a ble to go out to dinner once and a while and maybe have a hospital to go to if I decide to have a heart attack. Don't worry Mike, if I do get a place at Kiptopeake you are invited for as long as you need it. Although I really can't afford 3 bedrooms so you will have to share one with my 13 year old daughter...poor girl, she is a frightful thing and embarrasses me and her mother wherever we take her but maybe if you were share her room you could help us build her confidence. We took this picture of her last weekend at the beach...I hope it doesn't scare you off. link

If you are looking in the Stuanton area try looking in the areas outside of Staunton such as Verona, Stuarts Draft, Greenville. Wife grew up in stuarts draft and if I coudl I would be moving back there but I have to be within an hour of work which is in Roanoke. Just stay out of the Staunton and Waynesboro city limits and everything else surrounding there is beautiful. Can shoot down 64 to the beach and down 81 to SML. Plus if you like fishing a varitey of fresh water your not far from several really good spots.

Thanks Mytoyz and no fear, I only use the town as a boundry and will likely be west/southwest of all that. If we are not on the lake we are looking at 40-60 acre lots/properties adjoining NF so I can get my privacy/hermit life on.

Now you guys know the Mason Dixon line is north of Maryland. We've been over this before.

Now Ralph, I only said that because of the upcoming sales tax increase in Northern Va. It had nothing to do with the people, well maybe a little.

Hey Ralph, I think the world of you buddy but that whole Mason-Dixon thing...I don't know. I sort of figure it like this...the line is a fluid type of thing, it is where if you ask someone if they had the opportunity to secede from the union, the majority say yes on one side and no on the other. Near as I can tell it seems to be somewhere in the vicinity of 64 at the present time. Don't worry, you can come down here and hide with us if it comes down to it, we won't let the bastards get you.
