Okay is anyone getting alewives under lights or is it mostly creeks? Seems I used to have plenty of alewives and a few shad, now the shad are easy and the alewives are tough. DUH

I heard reports of ales being caught in a cove below Becky/Betty's in the evenings, as well as mid-way above the bride this weekend about 10pm....

I put the light on at 730pm saturday night and caught ales at 930pm. I checked the light right before I headed out the next morning and there were plenty ales under it.
This was in Bull Run....

I spend ten minutes clearing the net of gilled ales, after putting the bigger ones in the tank and tossing 50 plus small ones back in the lake, on one throw, under a dock light in the cove. This was just as light was breaking and I thought I'd gotten up too late. They congregate about an hour after I turn the light on and seem to stay there all night. Rarely get Gizzards here and haven't seen any this year yet. I think my mesh size is too small

Usually my light is really good for alewives. Nothing there but peanut threadfins this weekend. Are you sure you guys aren't mistaking threadfins for alwives? If not I need to find a new dock. Sounded like all the alewives were on the banks doing there thing. They will start moving back off the bank bout an hour or so before daylight. Leave your light on and get a few then before they move on out into deeper water.

Please tell me you're not getting threadfins Bigun! Kill them all.
I haven't tried for alewives in a long time at night, but I will next weekend, so I'll let ya know what I find. I would think they should be under the lights good. I heard some ales move up early Sat night about 845pm when I was putting the boat up.

yeah, gobs of them. Bout 11 pm sounded like the ales were rolling the rip-rap off the bank along with several cinder block thrown in the water sounding explosions and swooshes. ;D Thanks BentRod!! Really didn't want to kill them so I neted about 2500 of them and turned them lose at mwards dock. ;D Figured since he is so busy working on that dang basement maybe he could find time to catfish off his dock a little. Geeeezz, how may sq. ft. is that thing anyway. Seems like he has been working on it for 8 months!!!! ;D

Alright now the question, do you know the difference between a peanut gizzard and threadfin? I'm not doubting you, but I have not seen threads much at all over the past two years and definitely not by the hundreds. Threadfin Gizzard

Ok, the 2500 was an over exageration and I really didn't catch any and turn them lose and mwards dock. ;D Ended up fishing with juvenile gizzards neted out of hales creek. I promise the threads are there........If I say I can't tell the difference, will you feel sorry for me, catch and keep my shad cage filled up with ales? ;D

No but I'm gonna throw on your light and kill them all. Ha, I hope there aren't that many threads coming back..they'll take over again if there's that many.

I have no idea what I am catching. Little white fish. I call the big ones gizzard and the small ones alewife.
If there is a possible mis-identification to be made, I'll do it. I used to catch a lot of "crappie" until I found out what a white perch is. Haven't seen a crappie since.
I thought the basement was finished last month.
