Jason and I planned to fish fri and sat. I went out to catch bait fri afternoon. I had a couple problems before the boat splashed in. Thankfully a local neighbor pulled me out and launched the boat for me. Afterwards went looking for bait and found jumbo peanuts. Jason jumped onboard to hunt for bigger bait. The daylight was slipping away and the mongos were not cooperating. We did get a couple of pulls in without any luck. Night time had fallen. The bait search began with about 15 mongos in the tank. After a bologna sandwich we called it a night. 6 am arrived to floating mongos. Ugh! The search for bait was on again. Only a few mongos were found with a few jumbo peanuts in the tank. We had a couple pull downs without any takers. Im watching the armed guns and all of a sudden a huge WHOOOSH took place. Picked the rod up with only line! Man! I have practiced and practiced knot tying leading up to fri night. Jason then checked all of my rods. My knots were popping left and right making the sound of a breaking a stick. Ugh!! Jason bought my books and taught me the class again. I sure am thankful he is patient. The tank was about empty so we headed up river looking for bait and found the trash line. The skunk fell asleep on the boat! Wt 66-76 Water was stained to filthy muddy 5 free line pbs with jumbo pnuts and mongos 1 big bobber

When not fishing do you store your rods out of the elements? The sun can make line and knots weaker over time. Maybe pull off a few handfuls to get to some fresh protected line and retie everything from there.

That's a good point Shadslinger. Also, how old is the line and what lb test are you running?

Oh, what happened to the bait? Pump die or was it overloaded?

Primetime - I had knot problems last year. For me, they appeared out of nowhere and seemed to happen at the worst time. Every time I looked at the broken end it appeared to have broken in the knot. I never really figured out what I was doing wrong. I continued tying the same knot but did so much slower and much more deliberately. My issues disappeared about as quickly as the came. With fingers crossed, I hope that was all there was to it.

Make sure you wet that line good before pulling the knot tight as well.

Oh, what happened to the bait? Pump die or was it overloaded? Thats a $64 question? Thats what grandma would always say. I put new filters in wondering if there was a chemical on them. I also wondered if it was because i wiped down the inside of the tank with a towel which could have still had laundry detergent on it. Jason took the elbow off the water being pumped back into the tank thinking it was making the shad work harder.

I hadn't ever used that. I tend to go with improved clinch knot or Palomar knot. Those are just what I know. I'm no knot expert by far. I don't have any problems with them though. I think making sure they are wet when tightened is one of the biggest concerns on any knot.

Check your rods and gear to make sure you don't have a cracked eye on a rod or something on the reel that could be nicking the line when reeling or when stored. Is it happening only on olaners or only on float lines ? If so check the release clips.
I guess I'm saying are you sure it's the knot and and not some other source?

Line breaks and knot issues used to happen to me all the time. Rod holders, travel, planer board clips, trees, fins... You name it... All contribute to problems. I switched to 25 lb test last year and things changed for the better! Dewayne at CQ then talked me back down to 20 lb test and my issues started back. I then dumped all 20 lb and have been good to go since. 25lb suffix Blue and 25 lb flouro.
One thing I do religiously is to check for flouro nicks and will replace any leader that feels worn. Another thing I do is cut off about 5 feet of main line every so often. Feel yours... I'm sure it is worn in spots. When in doubt... Cut that s%~t out.
After that, I can't imagine with how hard you work, that your knots are an issue. As Shadslinger mentioned, a good shot of spit is paramount to any knot. I have used many.. Trilene, clinch, uni, San Diego jam, etc. The good old Palomar is my regular knot coupled with the Travis snell on the main hook. Simple, fast and very effective.
You have to get good and fast with knots. It's yet another art that requires mastery. Becoming good at it will increase the probability you retie versus saying... "ehhh.. I should be good." The ladder is what the fish want you to think.

I made it a habit to retie all leaders prior to every trip. A small amount of rust in the hook eye and swivel loops will quickly erode through the line in a fight.
I snell all of my hooks and use either a Palomar, Duncan, or Clinch knot on the swivel end.
I prefer the Palomar because the doubles the wear resistance within the swivel loop. The slightest wear on fluorocarbon will cause it to fail.
Put me in the 25lb test category too. 20lb would never hold for me no matter what.

Im going to check all the things you guys have mentioned. I think I will move up to 25lb main line with 25 lb liters. And keep practicing my knots. Thanks!
