Got to the lake Friday afternoon. Plan was to bait hunt in the creeks looking for a few good shad, then load up on ales that night at the dock light. After 30 throws or so, I had one dollar bill in the tank. I kept reminding myself that Yam says this is every bit as fun as catching stripes....ran up to the bait bowl at dusk and grabbed a net full of peanuts ( "it ain't the size of the pencil......") just to be sure I had something for the morning.
After an evening cocktail the size of a paint can...I knew I wasn't headed out to throw at lights. Headed down to my dock light around 11pm hoping for some big ales. Every throw yielded shad. Mongo's, dollar bills and everything in between....and 3 alewives. Honestly the first time in years my light has yielded gizzard. Strange season.
Out a dawn with a great tankful and high hopes. Water temps at 79, overcast skies burning off fast. Found plenty of scattered fish, lots of action on the lowrance...nothing on the hook except busy bait. Moved to a major creek mouth and caught a small fish quick. Started to see fish in 3-5's and an occasional swirl. I was sure this was one of those times the fish were gonna "turn on"...caught a nice 28'' fish and waited for the inevitable action...zip...zero. Buddies I had texted to move up here were all so pleased they had hustled up.
Decided to fish 300 yards from my dock in the evening. Actually convinced the better half to join me, promising we would catch fish. She was understandably skeptical. Put out a full spread mostly to impress her...and hooked up in 20 minutes with a nice 29'' fish. didn't stop to weigh her but I'm thinking 8-10lbs. ( which likely means 6-7 ).
Told the wife that's as good as it was gonna get and headed home.
All fish on downrods....flat and weighted light lines got banged around and skinned up but never really hit. C'mon Fall.

Nice report. Seems like the fish were interested in looking at gizzards but not very interested in eating them.
And like you, I had an easier time catching gizzards under the dock lights this past weekend. One throw netted me about 30-40 dollar bills - but never got more than a half dozen ales in any throw this weekend.
Maybe it is like Yam said - if they are easy to catch you can rest assured the stripers aren't feeding on them.

Awesome report lund!!! I was getting worried that since lund 2 joined the site, he had banned you from posting. Two things come to mind..... but I really like the paint can cocktail!!! 1. throw a time or 2 to scatter the gizzards and then catch ales.... 2. throw to the outer circle of your light (in the darker area) to catch ales.....

@bigun2 paint can cocktails are the norm on the BW side. It helps to ease the pain of not catching any fish. At least for me anyway.

Bigun- sage advice as always. I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed you didn't mention "it ain't the size of the pencil".....that was in your honor.
And yes....we BW guys know how to make any day of fishing a good one...regardless of the catch. Sometimes it's a monster vodka- soda with a chunk of something healthy for vitamin C......other times it might be a 12 pack of Yinglings and a can or two of sardines/crackers. It all works on the dark side.

Lund.. I'm a firm believer in a "picture is worth a 1000 words." However, with you, I would rather trade in the picture and read your 1000 words.
Always such a pleasure to read your witty and self deprecating humor. I found myself thinking... "Come on Charlie Brown...you can do it... Catch that fish of a lifetime!" But alas... he was handed a rock once again for his Halloween treat. And the never ending search for something keeps on going.

Sorry lund, after reading about "the paint can cocktail" that's all I could think about. I go to the lake to fish and catch fish, not catch bait. "It's not the size of the pencil, it's how you sign your name" is not something that the mongolodians practice. They would rather not fish and wait till it's mongo time.... I HATE catching bait........ now, pass me another paint can cocktail.

Thank you Yam! The truth is I have no idea how to upload pictures to this site...or any other for that matter. Every time I start to read MWards generous instructions, my brain goes into a fugue state ...same as when I read those posts about wiring instructions, amp usage, voltage capacity, explanations on how sonar actually works....it's like I'm wandering in a fog.
So you Roanokians are interested in how we fish on the BW side? For years there's been much chatter about a special stringer Gator keeps well hidden somewhere deep in the BW trails...well-stocked with stripes of all sizes and ages. Rumor has it Gator cares for his charges and based on his whim, releases them to satisfy both bait and artificial guys alike....well, it's half true. The special stringer is actually six 128gallon Yeti coolers, carefully stocked and chilled with libations and snacks of all kinds....hidden? Really well. On select weekends ( and an occasional Tuesday) Gator group texts the BW Mafia ( no intellectual property claims were violated) and the flotilla converges. Have you ever seen pics of big cove parties?...rows of boats tied together, music pumping, bikini's everywhere, endless selfies? It's like that. Last year Gator played "Little Red Corvette" for 3 days straight...he called it his memorial tour.
Anyway...that's fishing BW style. I'm not sure there's any room for Roanoke guys ( except Bigun)...and I guess Yam if he wore that hat,,,,,,
