Weather: Mostly sunny with clouds building in over the evening. Wind light & variable picking up to 5 from the E/NE
Water: 71-74, visibility of not much
Techniques: Part 1 - Pulling big gizzards on free-lines; Part 2: Throwing Storm jointed Thunderstick in Blue/Chrome & Rapala F-18 in Vampire to a main-lake point at night
Headed out about 5 pm to catch some gizzards and fish on the upper end of the lake so as to not burn as much gas and time for a short evening trip - headed to where we loaded up on some big ol' gizzards on the previous Saturday and while they were not flipping, and I don't think there in the same numbers, I put a dozen in the boat which I figured was enough for Fri evening and then some big ones to use Sat AM along with some alewifes which I'd go catch on the lights later that night.
Put out two on each side and started pulling - I had a bait up and getting chased pretty quick but it looked like a small fish - chased it for couple hundred feet before it lost interest. Pulled and pulled until a little before dark when I got into a stretch where the 2 bank side and one of the two deeper side baits came up, swirling - and one got chased - circled back over them twice but could not get them to eat so packed it in.
Somewhere along the pull a buddy texted asking if I wanted to night-fish with him that evening - I had planned to head down towards the dam and fish some shoals & deeper water where numbers are hanging on Saturday AM, but with the Challenger Fishing tournament going on I figured it would be crowded down there so I decided to go jump on with him and fish the night bite instead.
We headed out about 10 pm and arrived at his "spot" where he's done well over the past Spring's at night - a point off the main channel that has a little flat on one side but drops off quickly into deep water - and tends to be a key bait spawning & ambush point. The alewifes were working hard on that point already when we got there and it wasn't long we started hearing the largemouth busting bait up on the banks on either side of the point. One side of the point was protected from the E wind so we stayed on that side mostly - though would pull over to the other and make a few cast occasionally. We threw Thundersticks and F18's along the bank - shallow and deep. My buddy hooked up and landed a nice largemouth that probably went 5-6 lbs - and I finally managed to hook into one that was 3-4.
All at once the largemouth that had been pounding that point stopped, and we hoped that was the signal that the striper we about to move in.... and we did hear a few bust that were striper-like but we never did hook into one.
Fished the point till around 1:30am and then stopped at a few other spots on the way back to listen but the wind was building out of the E and make fishing some other spots not possible so we called it a night...
