Beautiful morning with a full moon, calm winds and a sun rising over the mountains. This is why I fish SML.
Sat: Caught ales off the dock in the early morning with a few going 6 – 7 in. We are near R11 and decided to run up the BW and Gills Creek. Had a friend on board who has fished SML but without much success and hoped to show him a good time. Put out a spread on Gills where I had decent results last year but after an hour or so we had nothing, very disappointing. We picked up and went further up the BW and tried again. We had some luck in the main channel with four in the boat running from 26 to 29 in. The wind started to pick up and made boat control more difficult. We moved in an effort to get out of the wind but not much luck with that. We continued to pull the main channel and had a good one on but it came unbuttoned after getting it close to the boat. We went over a shoal and hooked up with a very good fish, after getting it to the boat twice and saw that is was nice it popped off. I was mad that a knot or leader was the weak point and blamed myself on the loss of a good fish. But it turned out the Gamakatsu hook had broken just below the barb. I haven’t had this happen before. All fish were caught on planners and ales. Decided to call it around 2:00. Really weren’t bothered too much by the bass boats.
Sun: Decided to try Craddock Creek, I am determined to find some success here since it is close. Found one small 20 in. at the start and that was it. Saw several charter captains come in and spend some time and were gone. I guess we weren’t the only one with this idea and results.
Hoping to give it another try this weekend.
