Wt: 60-65 Conditions: mostly sunny winds 5-12mph Techniques: free line planers, and floats Had off work this past Thursday so I made the move up to the lake Wednesday evening to get my fix (it's really becoming an addiction) of stripes since I wouldn't be able to make it up this weekend. Lund1 had come up Wednesday midday to try his hand at some bait, and got his first net "full" is mongos We were out fishing by 545am, and our first pull of main channel points produced nothing. At our second stop we were started making fish right away and getting nervous bait. We had our back float that was dressed with a 15" gizzard just start screaming out drag. Lund1 was first to the rod. And it produced this nice 34" 15-16lber Shortly after that we hooked into 2 other fish in the same area at were between 27-29" For some reason after that action, we left those fish to move down river to find more fish...ended up putting 2 more fish 24" and around 20" in the boat before about 130pm. At this point the wind had picked up to about 13mph so we called it until the evening bite and picked up about 5 more good gizzards in the back of the creek we were in. After taking a 2 hour nap and waking up at 530pm i decided that I should head back to Raleigh to be ready for work in the morning, while lund1 went out to try his luck at the evening bite. He had two small swirls and no takers. All and all great day. 5 fish in the boat by 130pm one with some good size. It was great to finally put lund1 on some fish since he's been letting me borrow his boat, rods, reels, nets, bait tank etc. but in reality he was way more pumped on catching 15ish mongos in 1 throw.. I am not looking forward to the planer board maddness stopping. way, way, way more exciting than downline fishing.

I will admit...pulling up that net full of big shad was every bit as satisfying as any stripe I've ever caught. I spent a good part of the afternoon bait hunting, catching 1-2 at a time. One and done was awesome....after 30 throws. Of course this was the day after StriperJohn reported that all his action was on peanuts and ale's....so there was that little voice telling me to go find some of those too. I did, but when we hit the water in the AM we just couldn't resist pulling out the 7/0's with stingers. That evening I thought I had a strategy going...pulled across main channel points and large flats with drop offs. The wind was really howling for a while and I just hate that....not marking a thing and getting no interest in my offerings didn't help either. I found some calm water at a few creek mouths to pull and ended the evening fish-less and happy. It sure has been fun watching my son become a better fisherman then his old man. I honestly can remember when I was baiting his hook and handing him a rod after a strike like it was yesterday, even though it was 10+ years ago. It's a good life.

Very nice report guys! And I can fully appreciate your feeling of pulling up that net of mongos. It has been neat to have you and Chris learning on the Blackwater the same time as I have and sharing that experience on the water and on this forum. Congrats to you both! May you have tight lines, heavy nets and full tanks!

I should have added in my report that we were running big gizzs on bankside boards which were a good distance from the boat, and I moved boat when marking schools onSS so the fish probably never saw the gizzs. Ourside boards and floats got hit all with smaller baits.
