Got up to the lake Friday evening around 8pm, gave me enough time to get the boat all set up, and brought a few rods and reels up to the house in order to retie some leaders, stingers, etc.
Up on Saturday morning by 4:15 and on the water by 5 in search of bait. What i began to notice as my buddy and I pulled into the back of a creek that is usually plentiful with bait is that the water temps had risen substantially above the air temps and this was creating a mass amount of the steam you see coming off the water in the early morning. It was so bad that our spotlight was pretty much useless. Regardless, by about 630 we had a tank of about 10 mongos and 5-7 bills. We ran down the BW to a spot that had done good at the weeks prior, but there was no action. Pulled that area for the better part of the morning because it was the warmest water I could find. had one fat 29" 13lber eat about a 13" bait and got her to the boat. back to the house around 2 and took a nap till 4:45pm then we were back out on the water. At this point Lund3 (my little brother and Lund1's son) and friend had arrived at the lakehouse. Around 5pm me, my buddy and my little brothers buddy went back out for the evening bite. Pulled a few main channel points where the sun had warmed the water. Immediately go action. had a double, and almost a triple up, but managed to get a 34" 16lber to the boat along with a 29" 11lber at the same time. we moved a quarter mile up the BW to some more points and were greeted with more action. had some swirls as we were getting baits set out, and then a dollar bill got hit hard. I was on the rod and it felt like a very good fish, pulling out drag immediately, until the the knot gave right at the hook....I blame Lund1. action died down fairly quick as the sun went down.
Sunday morning was slow. up early again to catch bait, got about the same tank full as the day before. pulled all the spots that had produced fish, or action, the evening before with no taker. Only fished till about 12:30 because I was tired and it was a long weekend of a lot of fishing, little sleep, and a lot of beer drinking. Regardless it got the bug real bad.
It seemed to me that morning fishing was very slow this weekend with it picking up in the afternoon, did anyone else experience this? I fully expected the morning action to be white hot with the sun warming the banks. Additionally, I know the fish will start to move down river somewhat soon what time of year/water temps do the fish start this "migration"?.....I'm curious to hear how other guys did this weekend.
