Yam, that tag is actually a bird band. Many organizations band birds for study, so they can be identified when killed or captured. Banded birds are very rare. Mostly migratory birds are banded, as it helps wildlife officials and scientists track their seasonal movements. That's a picture for the books!!!! One in a million Awesome info John! Should I report this to someone? I have other shots of his band and you can make out some numbers. I would definitely be interested where he comes from.

I notice in the pics the Mongo's nose is red. When I put one out it comes out of the tank normal but when I check the bait over time the nose gets red. Is this normal? Does it affect the bite? Again a really amazing series of pics.

You might try sending an email and pictures to the following: USGS Bird Banding Laboratory US Fish and Wildlife Service Cornell University VA DGIF Those are the folks I know of off hand that might have banded it. I dunno if they will be able to help without all of the numbers but it's worth a try. It's likely there aren't many banded Ospreys around. If they can ID it you will likely get a certificate with all the birds historical information.

In terms of a red nose being normal, this is is a sign of stress. My guess is that if I was attacked by that bad ass bird, I would have more than a red nose. And I would probably still be pissed that some *bleep* head earlier threw a net on me and drove a sharp hook through the roof of my mouth and out one my nostrils.. Not to mention this same land-walking prick stuck a three-pronged treble hook in my ass and drug me through the water! No doubt, that shad had a bad day!
Personally, I don't think a red nose will affect the bite. However, a red nose does indicate that my bait is close to dying and that my bait-keeping skills could be improved. For me, a tank full of red nosed shad is more than enough reason to dump the tank, get the net out, and throw. But... If fishing were my first priority, I would fish red-nosed shad all day long.
Giving someone a red-nosed shad is similiar to giving someone a banana with a bruise on it. I would certainly eat this banana, but I would feel awkward giving it to someone else.

Hey Yam...this is surely off bird topic, but I thought you were a nostril to nostril guy.. This hook is through the roof and out. Do you vary based on "season"? Has the wolf given you insight as to a preferred style?

Has the wolf given you insight as to a preferred style? The wolf shows the shad swimming a touch better this way. A bit more hook is exposed as well. Honestly, I don't think it matters.

I'm glad you all found these shots as cool as I do. Wonderful things happen in nature when you immerse yourself in it. It's great to share with folks that appreciate the same things as I.

Yam -
You have set an unattainable bar. I applaud your innovation and creativity. You have given all of us the "red nose". no way we can beat these pictures. To break it down - "dam dude, that is freakin awesome!"
I love your ability to capture the experience, and would love to fish with you sometime. Let me know if you want to night fish sometime, it would be my privilege.
