Sorry you went through that experience but thanks for your willingness to tell the story. Glad to hear you are well.
Can we blame Bentrod for not being there?

Sincerely want to use it as an example so we all think about how to avoid similar situations And yes - we can blame BentRod. When I texted him after it happened his response was "I'd pay money to have seen that"

Mike I have never met you in person, but I am glad you are okay.It could have been so much worse. Thanks for posting this. Things can happen so fast.I usually wear my kayak vest when casting my net on my j16 skiff. sometimes it feels dorky to have it on, but one day it might save my life.

I have given this a lot of thought especially concerning the safety of my kids when they are on the boat. I have found a couple of really good deals at Cabella's. There is a different pfd that cost more but this one is on sale. They also have the belt pfd which is $50. Half off. Just wanted to pass this along.

Hey prime I experimented with these with my grandson and they don't provide enough back of neck support to hold his head up. I went with a standard lifejacket. It seems he doesn't weigh enough to keep these vertical they kept moving his head back.

It seems he doesn't weigh enough to keep these vertical they kept moving his head back. Would you recommend this for an adult? Or not because it sounds like if a person was unconscious then it wouldn't hold there head upright out of the water. My 13 year old and I are going to the bay in a week and I want to be safe. I didn't even think about it not having enough neck support. Thanks.

I really just tried them with my grandson who is 4ft 4in weighs 68lbs. Maybe heavier kids it would work better. I personally like those as a backup but not as a main lifesaver. Just my 2 cents. It is an item that could fail-a lifevest will not.

Mike, Glad you made it out OK. I know I have thought it might happen to me since I fish alone a lot in cold weather. Especially throwing the cast net when the temp is below freezing, I've done some skating on the deck, 2 weeks ago I broke down and got some insurance I bought a Striker Ice Suit, can't wait to use it hopefully I won't need to test it in the cold water. I'll trust the reviews on the suit for now.

Mike, I am glad you are ok. I especially appreciate the fact that you did not keep this to yourself but put it out there to bring awareness. I had my son just slide right off the boat grabbing for the dock this summer. I guess we get complacent but I bet this happens more than what we hear about.

A reply to just put this to the top as temps have dropped. I'm getting ready to come fish this weekend and reviewed this looking back at old posts, as I've not fished much in the winter. Lots of good advice here.

I'm sitting here at my desk reading this and am all worked up just thinking about it. Thankful that were are ok, and thankful that you'd want it all to serve as a warning to anyone else. I got the ignorance scared out of me in the kayak once offshore while solo. I hope I'll never forget what it felt like to wonder if this could be the end. It gave me a respect for the water that I'm not sure I could have learned any other way. Thank you again for the post, and for the reminder. ...And Craddockcreek for the bump.
