There is no doubt in my mind that a purge tank works well for not having to clean your filters so drastically at first. I have had situations where the entire surface of the water was a layer of slime and it did not get sucked into the filters. I had to skim it with a net. This has never occurred with a purge tank. However, if I am catching one or two at a time, the purge tank becomes less necessary. No doubt, the less you handle the bait, the better. Yet mongos are pretty stout creatures. When it comes to ales, replace the above slime with scales. For me, I use my big front fish box which is over 40 gallons to purge. I find that dropping them into this is less violent than trying to drop them in my tank. At the end of the day, you have to do what is right for your boat and situation. There is no perfect answer. Couldn't agree more. If I am catching one or two and I am by myself I throw them into the 5 gallon net bucket filled with clean water until I can get back to the bait tank. I have very limited room on my boat for purge tanks, extra buckets or people that won't clean the filter. Love this forum!

As for gizzards. Just throw them in the tank. Don't by lazy and clean the filter often. Bout 30mins-1hr change half the water. ..
Like bent said.. the less time handled the better

Nice meeting you Catsnstripers . Man I sure like your boat. We only hooked up with one of your flathead friends. My girlfriend had fun catching it, a quick pic and tossed it back. One of these days I need to save up for trip with you for a striper lesson. Hopefully in the near future.
