I have found a good dock light for catching bait. I have caught the largest ales the past 2 fishing trips since I started live bait fishing a few months ago. Why do some lights produce better bait fish then other lights?

Generally it has to do with depth - and what produces better will change over the season and depending on the type of bait you are after as well. When surface temps are warmer, the deeper lights - or lights close to deep water, tend to yield more ales.

In the fall I will want to use ales. Instead of hunting for white tail, I'm also going to hunt for Mongos in the back of creeks above Indian point. Well..... A majority of my time will be on the water and I will visit the woods a few times this year.

Ales will be on the light pretty much all the time - they like the cooler water, so as water temp cools the will be on more of the shallower lights - as well as the deeper lights (but will likely be shallower in the water column).

Anyone notice a baitfish attraction difference between a sodium-vapor bulb or a mercury-vapor one? Sodium has a yellowish tint and mercury has the bright white w/ blue tint. Also - sodium has a strong green band - along with a yellow band. Mercury has strong violet and green bands.
We possibly see a difference along the coast - with sodium as a better attractor for bait.

I 've noticed that strippers seem much more visible in the mercury vapor lights. of course it could be the light reflecting off the shiny poles and background make it appear that way. The bait does seem to come to either light well, of course I only use ones since I'm a poor retired guy. ? Now Gator and Bigun use 5s cause they're still working so they may have a different opinion.;D
