I will be headed up to point cove trail in 2 weeks to play with kids during the day and catch striper in the morning and evening. I was just wondering where to look for them this time of year. I have been studying maps of the lake and wanted any tips for this lake on location. This will be my first time going to Smith Mountain. Thanks, Mike

Welcome to the board! Is it "Cove Point Trail"? If so, it looks like you're on the Roanoke arm just above the State Park. Depends a lot on what water temps do over the next two weeks, but the mouth of that main creek at the entrance to the main river channel, the mouths of Beckys & Betty's and then on down just below the S-turns at the State Park would all be good places to look - as would just above the bridge......

Does anybody have a local map of the lake that will name the creeks and coves? Also, how is the best place to find bait? Thinking of a light in the water at the end of a dock. Will this draw in the shad? Also looking to buy some shad saver for my bait tank. Do any local marinas Cary these supplies?

Go see Dewayne or Hawk at Captain's Quarters at the Hales Ford Bridge on 122 - they can defiantly hook you up with Shad Keeper or Better Bait and any other supplies needed for striper fishing on SML.
Yes - a light on the dock will draw in bait - right alewives come in best to deeper lights in the middle to lower lake - bigger bait will show on shallower lights and small gizzard shad likely showing up easily up-lake. As the water cools and the thermocline dissipates, the bait will get easier on lights in the creeks up lake.
As to maps - there are few available - check out the free map at the Visitors Center at Bridgewater Plaza and see if it works... else I think Captain's Quarters and some of the marinas carry a few types.

Captains Quarters at the bridge has about anything you would need.... yes a light should produce bait..... don't listen to mward, there are never any fish just above the bridge.... and just a heads up.... don't go into any of the creeks at night.... there will be a very scary looking guy with a blue face in there talking to himself trying to catch mongos.... think papa smurf without the beard.... in a hoodie....
