Hi all, Been coming to SML for about 10 years now. Usually LMB fishing. Want to try Striper fishing this year. Will be down last week of Sept and 1st week of Oct. Need some advice. Does lake level affect striper location? What time is best to encounter "Jumps" AM time to be on location? PM? Are the Striper loctions shown on the SML map sold by the SML Assn. reliable? all year? At what water temperture do they move into the backs of river arms/coves? What lures do you use when stripers move shallow (2-6 ft.)? At this time of year where are they? Still in Summer locations, moving into river arms? As you can see I need alot of help

gdelmoro - Eric posted some links to good compiled summaries from various folks - several being guides - that have been around the lake a long time regarding locations & tactics. I'd also recommend you go look back at older posts in the Report section from the timeframe you will be here - give or take a few weeks - over the past few years - there is a fairly consistent seasonality to stripers on the lake.
Last week Sept / early Oct is an interesting time - a bit of a transition time heavily dependent if we've had a hot or cool summer and how quickly the water column starts to cool.
As to lures on shallow stripers - I like a YoZuri Crystal Minnow for a few feet down - but some top-water poppers and such can produce when they are that shallow....

Booked a trip with Travis Sept 28, looking forward to catching some Line Sides! Also checked all the links and did multiple searches and got alot of good info.
SML has a SM Striper Club. Is joining a club something a yearly visitor could benifit from?

Is joining a club something a yearly visitor could benifit from? I would say Yes. The club does an amazing job with just about everything they do.Access to the club site and the newsletter are added benefits.

I'd also say "yes" - though in full disclosure , I'm biased as the current Club president However - there is lots of good info in our newsletters ans club meeting videos available to members which can help you at SML or other waters. Also, while we'd love to have you here and attending meetings / events - it is anyway to show support for the fishery - the stronger our membership the stronger our voice to DGIF, the community, etc. PM me if you'd like more details - I'd be happy to email you a sample copy of the newsletter (offer goes to anyone else interested in the Club as well). You can also find out more at www.SmithMountainStriperClub.com
