Well i was down with the family for 9 days of play for them ..... and 9 days of fishing for me!! Now i had my 2 girls, my son, and my wife and still had to fish by myself. I was the camera man, fisherman and the guy that caught all the bait. weather was nice other then a few storms for the week and i like fishing adverse weather anyway so it was a perfect week. Caught fish everyday some more then other most came from long light lines. the citation was on a planer board with 25ft of line with a 3/8oz weight I did find some large schools that i was able to jig on with success. This is the largest striper i have taken since 2003, I tried to release her but she would not release We kept 2 striper the first day and this 22.5lb 38.5in striper that i would have loved to catch again someday.

Nice fish - mixed feelings for you I know - the big fish are just very unlikely to release in the warm water and if they do it's questionable if they will make it anyway. We had one that was 6-7 lbs that didn't go back even after a quick return - we even found a big ol' flathead floating in the middle of the channel tonight - going to happen. I know you do your part when they can return successfully. Got worn out myself from earlier in the week so took Fri and weekend "off". Can't do it eveyday Glad you had a good week on the water.

Sounds like a very nice time. Nine days in SML heaven! And a beautiful citation to boot.

Good try on the release... shame tho, but it does happen.. i still try to release all fish over 30inchs in the summer... not always possible, but we still can try can't we.
They sure as hell won't live in the cooler.
We have had to bring home a few over 30 this summer so far that would not release. I believe a total of 4.
Good rule of thumb, even for the little ones. If this fish has lost color and turned yellow. The fish is done. It is over stressed, the acids have built up to much for survival..... if a big fish decides to make his fight on the surface, chances of him being released is slim.. hold the pole into the water. All the way to the reel. Try to get him to swim down... I'd rather lose a big fish in the trees than kill one by the 83 degree surface...
Quit fishing.. several charters this year we have returned to the dock by 9am... most understand..
I believe it was bent rod that mentioned to me several years ago.. summer fish 30ft and shallower have a much better survival rate then fish hooked 30ft and deeper... watching this over the years with the fishes reactions to where caught. I believe that is very much true...
I applaud you for trying to release big fish.. but it happens.. if we get 8 out of 10 released then I believe a difference is made...
i as well as many others preach selective harvest as much as we can. Not just for stripers. But all fish in our fishery.
I love to eat fish.. eat them all the time. You just have to do so with conservation for our future in mind.
Our flathead fishery is in a world of hurt. I see way to many pics of big cats on stringers.. would love to see some protection laws go in effect soon. The number of 20, 30+ pound catfish is way down then what it use to be...
To much want and waste in our society. We all want citation fish. . To kill them all is not needed..
If you want to kill everything and hang on peg boards... give me a call, I'll give you some phone numbers
To all that try to practice selective harvest. . And respect our fishery and all fish that swim in it.. thank you

Nice catch. Sounds like nice family time too.
I have just begun to use planer boards. It seems like, when a fish is dragging that board around under water, that puts a lot of drag on its ability to swim, that the board is one more thing to fight, so it might get more worn out than if there was no board on the line. Or do most people have the boards stay on the surface when a fish is on? It seems like mine spend most of the fight down somewhere near the fish.

Nice catch. I'm sure you would trade that fish for a 26" fish and saved that one for October.
Well said CnS

Oars if your boards arent releasing your connecting them incorrectly.

Nice catch, sometimes you just can't save one. That one will eat just as good as the little ones.

Hey Tommy its plain tough in summer keep any of them alive. Good report. Btw a friend in Santee tried those tuna tubes with injected oxygen and only had about 50% survival rate.

Cats...... My hats off to you for your care for our fishery, Thanks for all you do!! Ill use the info when and if i get lucky with another trophy! Gator .... as well as i liked that moment when i first seen her beside the boat yeah i would trade no questions asked.

Heck of a fish and no taking away from that - good to see more and more that size - hopefully collectively we are doing something right

That's a good fish Tommy. May be the best one of the summer, unless someone brings one up down around the dam again this year. Releasing them alive between mid-June to end of September is tough. I will sometimes catch a couple in the hot weather months when I'm out at night cat fishing, but generally i pretty much stop fishing for striper during the summer. When college football kicks off in early September, that's when I start again.

Thanks guys!! Hillbilly you might need to show me some catfishing tips and keep off the striper in the summer.
The pics i have were cut from the video after the failed release. looking at the video i should have torpedoed her a few more times in an attempt to get cooler water on her.
