Water: 83-84, visibility of a few feet
Weather: Overcast then changing to partly cloudy, rain to start the morning but stopped before lines were in the water. No wind to speak of
Techniques: Alewifes on downlines (4) - fished 25-40', and light-lines (4), mostly over 30-60' bottoms
Time Fished: 5:45a - 9:45a
On vacation this week, so figured it was only right to kick off the week with some striper fishing Hit the bait light around 10pm and bait was easy. Should have just dumped the 1/2" mesh net straight into the tank as most were decent ales - but put 3 dozen in the tank and then with two or three more throws I topped the tank off with around 6-7 dozen baits
Set the alarm for 5am - awoke to a hard down-pour. Fortunately it was fast moving through the area and by the time I was ready to head down to the boat it had mostly stopped - and had stopped by the time I cleaned the bait tank filters and got rolling down the lake to pick up Tyler. Picked Tyler up about 5:45 and we went looking..
We marked some scattered fish but not enough to warrant putting out bait. I decided to go check the creek where I l hit a big school last weekend. We didn't see a lot at first - a fish here and there..... we were about to leave when we marked a few more and decided to go ahead and put out the bait. Never found a monster pile of fish, but did see some good scattered fish and pods.... Picked up three fish in that creek over a while before things went dead....
Tyler had two light-lines go off at the same time - thought he was doubled up...
Turns out it was just a very ambitious striper......
We headed down the lake a bit to check another creek - looked in the back of a finger of the creek and marked a few fish so we put baits out again.... no hook-ups - missed one on a downline circle hook with a bent (partially closed) hook - knew we should have fixed that. Then we ran over a pile of what had to be white perch - on good pull on a down-line and then a light-line with a larger bait had a poor alewife pecked to death when we brought it back to the boat....
The sun started to come out as we moved to another spot to make our last pull before I had to head over to meet up with the guys from the Striper Club for our "boat show". We pulled a stretch over around 30' or so of water...... Picked up a real small fish - 16"-18" or so , missed one. Even Ms. Lily got into the act keeping an eye on a down-rod
As we were nearing the last few hundred yards of our pull we found what we'd been looking for....
We only picked up one fish out of that mass.... expected all the rods to go down..... we turned to try and find them but never did so called it a day..... dropped Tyler off at the dock and I headed on to meet the guys from the Club
Not a bad morning trip - 5 fish to the boat and missed a few..... biggest around 10 lbs with the others going 6-7 lbs except for one dink. 4 in the cooler for a fresh stripa' dinna' tonight!
