Weather: Overcast with some light drizzle off and on. Temps in the upper 60's, rising to low 70's, little to no wind
Water: 82-83, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: Alewifes on downlines (4) and light-lines (4) with 3/8 or 1/4 weights
June was a bust for me in the striper department, so it was time to right the ship as we start July. I headed out around 10pm on Thursday night to net some alewife on the lights. I was getting then 10-24 at a time - did not take too many throws - spend more time dealing with gilled baits. Had a really nice toss that brought up a bunch of nice ales, a few gizzards and an 8 lb carp that crushed all the bait along with it Then, I pulled this thing up...... pretty sure it is Satan's Spawn, but not sure.....
The bait settled in nicely over night and I hit the water about 5am to go and pick up Tyler
We checked a couple of Roanoke-side mid-lake creeks first thing without marking fish, so went and looked in a "Summertime" favorite creek - marked a few fish in a pod so we put out bait and the light-lines started to do work. Picked up three fish about 1/2 back in that creek - all on light-lines.
We moved to the mouth of the creek, spotting a nice pile of fish so we set-up and started making circles, but things seemed to die off..... then we saw why...... someone had brought bananas and tossed one out, cursing all that were near....
We did manage to pick up one in the mouth, and watched ReadyToFish's son land one
We decided to make a move and give another look at a creek we'd checked earlier, due to some reliable intelligence. We pulled some points about 1/2 into the creek, working our way back to the mouth. Picked up another on a light-line - a while later I spotted a fish shooting up off the bottom and told Tyler to hold on...
Worked around the mouth of the creek, where we found our intelligence source also working it, and making good on his intel...... We had just changed most of our baits, but I was lazy and didn't change out one...... then that downline was hammered....... and landed this 4 lb channel.......
We started to pack it in a little before 11am - Tyler hooked up with the last of the day....
7 striper and a kitty-cat for the day..... nothing big - biggest was 26" - but we put some fish in the cooler to use next weekend at our Striper Club fish-fry and enjoyed the cool, overcast morning - sure beats a "normal" July day.....
