Lower BW water temp 84 Anchored on a point in 35 ft at 4am caught one fish on a downrod. Lots of bait to the light but most was very small. Just before light pulled anchor and pulled freelines and planers. Caught 7 more before 9am. largest about 27in. Did not mark any large schools but did have 3 fish hit at the same time, only caught one of those. Fish seemed to be scattered, at least where we were. Had a couple of guys with me that are new to striper fishing and very glad they got to catch a few fish. Using 3/0 circle hooks and I am amazed how well that hook works and all fish but one was hooked in the corner of the mouth. can't figure out how that hook seems to sow itself in the corner of the fish's mouth.

Good report. I once saw a circle hook demo where a guy held a 4/0 in hand and his partner jerked the rod hard, hook came right out. Then a repeat with a slow steady pull guy yelled opened hand hook stuck in edge of palm. Amazed and have used them ever since.

They are great hooks . U don't have to watch ur rods as close. I think it's better on the fish that you c r. I used to flathead fish a lot wit j hooks an live bait. The majority of fish were gut hooked so I had to cut line an release fish. I switched to circle hooks and seen that it was better on the fish by being hooked in the corner of the mouth. It also caught more fish because I wouldn't touch my rod until it was doubled over. The only downfall is i miss it when you try to rip his lips off. It's hard not setting the hook but you get used to it.

I've seen way to many tests on Circles versus J's to justify anyone using J's for live bait fishing. I know a lot of guys on here claim they catch more with J's on planers and/or whatever, but the tests show that simply is not true. I know everyone has and opinion, but when you look up the tests from Bassmasters to deep sea Captains, Circles save fish. We had a real nice largemouth on that must of come up behind the bait swallowed it and swam toward to boat with it. We didn't know he was on for a while, then brought him in and couldn't see the hook. So I lipped him and jerked the line hard. The danged circle came right out of his gullet without touching anything. My opinion, but a true conservative minded fisherman uses Circles exclusively. Yes, I know I could have cut the line and he'd get rid of the hook, seen and done that a bunch, I just wanted to try the jerk method I had seen on a tv show a while back.

All I use are circles boards, free, down, floats they work. Some guys just like the jerking hook set of j hooks. I have never seen a time that I thought I missed a fish because it was a circle-unless of course you get excited and jerk the rod.

I don't always use circle hooks on downrods because I don't seem to see hardly any deep hooked fish on the downrods. But always circle hooks on planers, freelines or split shots. Nice to see the lip hooked fish to release.
