Departed a lexington n.c. at 2:30 heading to the lake. Launched the boat at 5 am in searchof some fresh bait. First well lit dock I came to I threw my 10ft old salt and was rewarded with 4 dozen 5-8" Ales. I'm not making this up. Poked around a few more time and had a tank full of good guy ales/bluebacks, I split ones stomach and the lining was black so I'm pretty sure the where blue back herring. Overwelmingly with joy and tons of good juju, so I threw down the throttle and twisted her tail as we where heading south down the roanoke in the dark. Cracking daylight comming through the s-turns saw a few fish busting bait. Put the breaks on and started throwing plugs and bucktails but no takers. Never marked any bait or the fish again so decided to keep rolling south. Heard reports from friends that their was some fish in becky and bettys so stopped in to get a peak. Marked very little bait and fish but decided to give it a wirl, had a few short strikes but not what I was looking for. Gotta to the back of the creek and picked up a small 26" fish, headed out still rolling south burning gas. Passed the state park stopping at every fishy looking spot with no promise of bait or fish. Decided to pull another creek, several playful fish but no serious takers. Water quality was great down lake but the wind was gusting at 15-20 and making it tough and eating up precious t.m. batteries. , Finally picked up another small 25" fish and decided to go to what I know instead of chasing reports and head back up the roanoke, got up past the 47 marker and started marking alot of fish and bait in the channel and creeks but thewater quality was pretty stained. Put a spread out and started beating the banks. The wind was in my sail and I had to put 2 drift socks out the back to keep under 2mph. DID I mention wind sucks. No love but the fish where there. Thunderstorms rolled in and pushed us off the lake around 5. Tommorow I'm gonna fish the stained water with the fish and hope for a fat pig in the upper roanoke . Stay tuned.
