Good morning all,
I’m sorry if this is poor taste, but I’m coming down to Roanoke for work next week and I’m looking for some local advice and this appears to be the perfect place.
Anyway, I’m from Massachusetts and am an avid striper fisherman. I’d like to have a go at the hybrids you guys have in Smith Mountain. I travel with a 7 ft spinning set up and I was planning on bringing the plugs and plastics we use up this way for stripers. I’d be fishing from shore (if that’s even possible/allowed).
Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated. The stripers up my way won’t show up for a few weeks and I’d love to try something new……
Thanks,
Ben

You won't catch any hybrids at SML. We do have stocked stripers though. Not exactly sure where to tell you to go for bank fishing. It is allowed but not many places to fish from the bank. Best bet is probably the state park. best of luck and let us know how it goes.

We don't have hybrids in SML - only stripers. Bank fishing may be tricky As there aren't many options - probably fishing under the bridge at Hardy would be your best bet, but maybe some others have some other options. When/how long will you be here?
I'm heading to Boston in July for a week - any good shore fishing for stripers around that time? Thought about hiring a guide, but can't bring myself to pay $4-500.

Some (not all) Marina's will allow you to fish from their shoreline, and sometimes even their docks, providing your not interfering with anything, or anyone trying to use their services.
Always ask, and get permission from the Marina Owner/Manager before fishing from their property.
I have also seen people fishing from under Hales Ford Bridge several times. Don't know if it was legal, or may be trespassing, but they were there.
Also, I'm pretty sure that if fishing from shore, or someone's docks, you still need a valid Virginia fishing licence. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this).

I've fished for stripers in the river in March and April up at Explore Park at the end or Rutrough Road in SE Roanoke. I've caught a few up there..It might be getting a little bit late though, it'll be late April when you are here and a lot of fish will be heading downlake then.
It'll be a challenge without a boat. Cutbait from the bank around the Halesford bridge would get it done though, at night.

Thanks for the quick replies and for clarifying on the stripers/hybrids in the Lake.
So, it sounds like this isn't a very good idea. The setup I travel with is a bit light for bait fishing. I'm flying into Richmond Sunday morning and leaving Tuesday night, so I figure I will have Sunday and Monday afternoon/evening and maybe Tuesday morning early. To be honest, all I want is a shot at some action regardless of the species - its been a LONG winter up here.
So shifting gears, any advice on what my best bet for putting a bend in my pole?
And yes, I had already planned on getting a license regardless of what I end up targeting.
BentRod - When in July are you coming up? Shore fishing is still pretty good in July - especially on the North Shore north of Boston - and there are a ton of different options. Feel free to e-mail me as it gets closer and hopefully I can give you some specific advice as the conditions and bite can vary greatly on almost a daily basis - deadthresher@yahoo.com

I'd rather not go the guide route, but out of curiosity what kind of cost are we talking about?
I'll gladly take those referrals and make some calls to feel them out.
BentRod - You will be fine even that late in the month. Surf casting does get tough mid summer as the water warms up. Night time and throwing live eels is generally your best bet regardless of the time of year. Tides stages and moon phase play a big role as well. Can you bring your own gear? When fishing from shore up this way it's generally with pretty big stuff - 10 ft + surf rods and reels that can handle 30-50 lb braid.

1/2 day trips are usually $3250-$350 for 1-2, plus tip - more for a full-day trip of course.....

Thanks - a bit too rich for my blood. That, and I like to do my own thing if possible anyway - as long as begging locals for advice still qualifies as "doing my own thing".
What about sweetwater for largemouth, smallies, trout, etc.?
And again, I very much appreciate the input.
Tight lines boys!
