My brother visited this weekend and I wanted him to be able to catch a few fish. I knew it was going to be cold but I didn't expect it t be nearly as rough as it was. I turned my light on Friday night and caught a gazillion alewives in three throws. I kept about four dozen that were 4-5 inches but there were a dozen or so that may have been 6 inches.
Despite the weather we headed out about 7:00. I intended to stop on the way up river to catch some gizzards but opted to stick with the alewives because I just could not get excited about throwing the net in the wind and cold. Like Mike, we tried to find an area that gave us some shelter from the wind but unless you wanted to just park the boat it was nearly impossible. We hit a few creeks and found some fish but had not takers during the first couple of hours. We could really only manage boards on one side of the boat along with a couple downlines and a float trailing the boat. We were doing some casting and after setting these poles down for about ten minutes, my brother says there was something wrong with the pole, it won't cast. He was using a pole with braid and the smaller three eyes at the end were completely closed with ice.
I am still pretty inexperienced with the the appropriate setup with weight, especially with alewives. We had no action all morning until got the boards off the banks and added some more weight. We had a couple of misses and each landed two. Both fish were just under 32 inches. One weighing just under 12lbs. and the other almost 13lbs.
My job was done for the day. We had a few fish and my brother was more than willing to head back to the house for some cards and to watch basketball.
We stopped on the way back to catch some gizzards for Sunday but we were not able to catch anything that was of decent size. It didn't take me long to give up and head to the house. I turned my light on again on Saturday night and threw the net three different times and caught nothing. I thought it strange that from one night to the next I went from tons of alewives to absolutely none.

We slept in and finally got out for a few hours mid-day. We used small alewives around 4-5 inches with only a few nice ones leftover from Saturday. During the first hour we found lots of fish but caught nothing. About 1 pm, in the same general area things turned on and we caught six but nothing larger than 25 inches. Just as fast as it started the bite stopped. We continued to find fish for the next hour but caught nothing.
Sunday was a much nicer day to be on the water.
