STINGERS
On Friday I was using some smaller shad (7-9") and downsized to size 6 trebles. They sucked. I then put number 4s back on these shad and although they looked rather big, I seldom missed. Interestingly enough, most all my fish were caught on stingers and were hooked through the lip. And.. the fish were not messing around. Does this mean they are engulfing the the smaller bait from the side? Or maybe it means that my "psycho like" set tactics are pulling the stinger through to the lip and the J hook ain't got a chance to set?
My question is, what exact size stinger do you use for the various size baits? Is number 4 a good all around stinger size?
STINGER LINE
I was taught to tie the line on the J part of the hook. This requires two knots. One on the J and one on the treble. Now that I LOVE the Travis snell...AND I MEAN LOVE....I have been experimenting with leaving the tag end long and just tying my stinger to it. It seems to be working but also might be why my J hook is not being set. This makes tying a stinger rig real quick.
My question is, how do you tie your stingers? What knots do you use? Do you use a stronger line such as 30 lb for the stinger?

I've always upped the test of my stinger line so that's why I've never used the tag of the snell. I generally use 30lb now and feel comfortable with it holding - I used to use 40-50 but it's not necessary. 20 is too low in my opinion - I've had it break quite often on a stinger line.
I use size 2 on 10" plus and rarely ever stinger a 7"shad - I don't feel comfortable doing it as you'll gut hook more fish in my opinion.

Do you have an issue with using the tag? Seems a little wonky but is working so far.

Ran across this tonight - I've mentioned before about when I snell my Octopus hooks, that I should run a long tag line to then tie the treble to
Snell the treble FIRST..... THEN, snell the Octopus or Circle hook....... duhh..... simple, easy, lets you get the distance between your treble and your circle exactly how you want it, etc.....not sure why I didn't think of this......

Did you watch the one video of the bait that used a similar technique? It seemed to me that it really pulled on him as he swam. So then I examined a bait where the stinger is tied to the J. Based on these two videos I convinced myself that tying to the J is better. However, it could be possible that it was my stinger placement that caused the problem? Time for a new video! I totally want to feel good about the technique above as it makes for a QUICK stinger rig and a very accurate stinger length.

Yam - video away... I'm thinking your leader was too short for where you were attaching it, resulting it it pulling on the hook like that. Also, while not hugely different, using the snell like above would result in the leader coming off the hook further down the shank than when you had it up at the eye...

Actually, it was the tag end of a snell with 10 wraps. It was done exactly like the video with the exception I tied a palomar to the treble because it is not an offset eye (although a snell would probably work on the treble too). Another thing I just thought of. Don't you guys use 30 for the stinger and 20 for the leader? If so...RUT ROH!
