Arrived early as usual. The bait was thick! I decided to hit the outer edges to catch less and do less damage to the bait. Worked well.
I then fished all day and had pesky little pull backs but no real commitments. In a word... SKUNK!
Not sure if it's the mud or what? I really fished hard. It was like playing Dodge ball with logs. DO NOT TRAVEL AT NIGHT!
The water temp was around 45 all the way up to beaver. I did see 48 in one spot. Does muddy water affect fishing with live bait?
I think I will try to find some less coffee like water tomorrow. South bound!

Yes,find the mudline and look there for more active fish,in my 30 year experience alot of fish will move down lake with it some will stay and become inactive. If the water was warmer they probally would just move shallow. Muddy water,no problem, cold muddy water= problem.Over the years i ran into this most years, this time of year.At times i would just stay downlake near home(camper)on Sunday after a bad Saturday and find good fishing in some of the lowest creeks on the lake. Not as many fish, but they did feed and scaleing down on bait size also can help. Just my first thought after reading post. heehee feels kinda good shareing after lurking so long! Kenny

Yep,I agree the dreaded bottom fishing,i hate it,but it works especially in cold water or bluebird days.the year of the fish kill it seemed like the only way to catch them early that year,i don't know if they were programed to feeding on the dieing threadfins or what, but caught more bottom fishing that year than i ever have, cedar keys included.

Happy/Mward, Funny this bottom fishing should come up now. I'm in my garage yesterday going through my fishing gear (putting away hunting gear) and ran across a box of old bottom rigs from years gone by. I think the last time I used them was the big fish kill year as well.

If I have to cut bait, I will just go home and play checkers by myself.

Some of my biggest fish out of sml have come from cut baiting... I just cant do it regardless of what I might catch. I'm addicted to watching shad flee for their lives from stripers. I love it when the hook goes perfectly through the shad's nose. When I give him a toss and he smacks the water. When the shad feels like a nice bass as he swims and puts tension on my line. And when the shad runs to the surface and gets dragged down by a beast?? FO GET ABOUT IT!
