Last night I transposed my Catch Logs into the Angler Diary spreadsheet to send to Dan Wilson @ DGIF, so I messed around and ran the data like last year as well on some key stats.... I capture here not to flaunt anything - this probably pales in comparison to a lot of folks that generally lurk in the background here - but rather to force me to work the data and review it - and be able to look back at it in the future. And hopefully inspire more of you to record your trips in 2015 and keep those angler logs to submit - this is important data for Dan Wilson to keep tabs on our fishery. This reflects all trips in which I was on the boat..... If we fished the morning and quit, and then I slipped back out or with someone else in the evening, then I treated that as two trips - but if we were out all day, except for a lunch break - that was one trip.
Fished 10 more trips in 2014, but only 3 more hours in total, and we caught 33 more fish this year than year before - so I guess we're working more efficiently We had 11 more trips this year than last which were "under our boat limit" and 5 more skunks. Even with that, the average hours per fish caught dropped for us from 59 minutes/fish to 53 minutes/fish - so I guess we had more "good" trips as well as more "bad" ones". I know there were a number of trips where we knew going in that we were "swinging for the fences" - "hero or zero" - and we zero'ed out on a number of those - or pulled out 1, maybe 2 fish with three of us on the boat for a good part of the day - so that hit our average.
We did catch a few more citations in 2014 (4 vs 1), several more fish >= 35" (I call these "Yamtations" ), and quite a few more that were >=30" or so. A good year - overall, it feels like the fishery is more or less the same as 2013 - not many trips that we hit those monster schools - in fact it felt like less times in 2014 that before - but we perhaps were also fishing a little differently as well......
Regardless, it was a great year - and we're blessed to be able to fish a fishery like this - I know of a lot of fisheries where folks will fish all day, hope to catch one or two that are <24". As long as continue to work to protect our fishery, releasing our big fish, practicing responsible harvest, etc - then this will continue to be a great place for us all to enjoy! Keep those logs in 2015!

(1) If 3 of us were on the boat, then our "limit" would be 6 fish, so if we only caught 5, it goes in this category. This is NOT a statement of how many we kept
