Okay, I admit it.
Some of you might have even witnessed it.
I have the bait slime smell on my boat to prove it.
Yes, Sunday, I put the wimp rod down, cajoled the boys with promises of striper feeding frenzy, and threw the (gasp) cast net into the boat.
I even found bait. I think it was bait, smallish looking fish, kinda resemble flies, but smell way worse and die when shoved into bait tanks by the millions.
There may have been some bait gluttony involved, not sure I can be held responsible. They did look kinda tasty.
We dragged them for a long time.
We dragged them up the river
We dragged them down the river.
We dragged them past at least two boats that were fighting fish.
We talked a LOT about all the fish being caught all around us.
We didn't catch anything, but we sure did drown some bait.
On a brighter note, I found that not catching anything this way was way easier than not catching anything flyfishing. My arm hurts less, but there is something less gratifying about not catching anything when you are using something the fish normally eat.
You people are a really really bad influence.

I think I'm gonna invest in some planners. I did enjoy having the boys out there, and they seemed to enjoy it too. Next time I plan to take them, I'll send out an SOS and maybe one of you kind hearted bait slaughterers can point us in the right direction!

hey green monster don't you just love dragging bait around and enjoying the pretty things nature has to offer then watch OTHERS catch fish....THIS TIME OF THE YEAR YOU GOT TO HAVE BIG SHAD....last month we went and drug them peanuts around half the day and nothing at all...ran into a great guy travis and he gave me big shad and I didn't change hook size and missed 10....so next time throw the net for hours trying to get the bigger shad and it will probably pay off....good luck lee

2013, I'm still learning what bait is, so I have a lot to learn before I can even recognize a BIG bait! I'm only throwing a 6 foot net, though, so I better have some really good aim! As for the lures above - that would about break my arm throwing THAT on a flyrod!

Green, don't do it man. You would be better off starting meth. It's cheaper.
Seriously though.. Once you get your first net filled with big torpedo looking things, you stick a big hook through one's nose, and a monster striper destroys it's life before you very eyes.... You will be done. And as you reel in your very first fish this way, you will come to realize that it actually reeled you in to a lifetime addiction.
But unlike beer pounding croaker catching, big bait fishing is a physical sport that requires strength, endurance, will, knowledge, adaptability, agility and most importantly, a touch of insanity.
Go for it! But first, I recommend for you to scour this board. The knowledge piece is contained right here. The rest comes with time on the water.
6 footer huh? Last year around this time, that's all I had. And now I'm doing bicep curls with my 10 foot net in between throws.

Don't caave iiin, if you're a fly fisherman you won't be satisfied dragging up stripers on heavy tackle. I did it for years as a kid. Just load that depth charge line (350-400grain) and a good double deceiver or x large silver clouser pattern and you'll get on them just as if you were jigging a fluke. Tight lines

Satan . . .er . . . stripedyam (odd the resemblance?) I am desperately trying to resist the temptation. Actually, while personally I have only moderate interest in the bait world, being a father means sacrifice and a 9 and 5 year old aren't gonna catch the addiction throwing flies all day, so for their benefit, I will have to dabble in bait a lot more. I am even contemplating the purchase of a (gasp) planer board or two . . .
Juiceman - I expect to see you on the Flyfishing thread on this forum - we need the moral support! So far, we've got a few followers - Bigj being the most dedicated, Formula 180 seems to be teetering and may join the path of wisdom, honor, and sore arms. We could use a few more and if you've got experience actually catching anything this way, we could use all the help we can get!

Hey greenm I kind of stand with Will Rogers on fly fishing-although I am moderately proficient at it. He said "golf is a good walk ruined" and wrt Fly Fishing "its kind of like being forced by your dad to pick the Willow switch that he is going to beat your butt with, only in this instance you are just beating the water, both ways you lose." LOL .

We could use a few more and if you've got experience actually catching anything this way, we could use all the help we can get! Green, just a little over a year ago, I cursed bait fishers and dismissed them as cheaters. All I had were some nice spinning reels, a giant bag of 1 to 2 ounce spoons and 3 thundersticks. And then it happened... as I cruised around with a Lowrance rep and long time striper addict, we marked some big shad. His job was to show me how to mark stuff. But he couldn't resist. His calm demeanor swiftly changed as he grabbed the net he brought with him. In a blink of an eye all I see is this mad man with a net spinning around like a whirling dervish, eyes all freaky like, followed by a throw that made a perfect circle on the water. And as the net sunk and he caught his breath, he started to heave his net in with a goldmine of 20 or so big shad. We were not even going to fish! He then threw the bait back with a look of contentment and peace. This was on Lake Anna where I used to live. I remember telling him that I was going to SML to fish for the first time. His last words to me were, "you will never come back to Anna once you get a taste of SML" This same man made the mistake in joining me after seeing the fish I was catching with my spoons. And the words he spoke to me are the words that are haunting him this very second. Both of us dream of our next trip to SML. If you want to get started quick with your kids. Keep that net. Buy an assorted size of circle hooks. Catch them peanuts. Find a point that is holding bait. Anchor lock. Drop the bait down to various levels above the tree line. And then enjoy being with your kids. As soon as you get into a good conversation and forget about the fish, they will hit. And as you do this, keep your eyes on big bait fishing with planer boards.

Striperjohn, he absolutely had that right!!
Stripedyam,We are headed out tomorrow. Gonna swung by gander in a moment and see if planer boards will fit in the budget, then give em a try with the boys. I do like the idea of just dropping bait though, unfortunately my riptide isn't an I pilot so no spotlock. Will be putting in at hardy so if any of you kind hearted baiters are feeling the Christmas spirit and want to supply advice on where to drag our baits, we will happily accept.
One confession in all of this. In college I was a psychotic bait massacrer. There was never enough and I would go bug eyed when I found a big school of greenbacks. Like a recovering alcoholic, I am trying to mend my ways. . .
