Weather: Friday: Overcast, temps in the mid 50's, little to no wind / Saturday :Light rain till about 9:30a, Winds started around 9, building as the morning went on - blowing sustained 15 with gusts to 35 from the N/NW
Water: 60-62, visibility of a couple of feet - except on Saturday - not sure on the visibility between the white-caps and the leaves
Techniques: pulling big gizzards on freeline planers and then on Saturday I added to the spread leaves on the face of the gizzards & mongo alewifes on light-lines (2) - that often had leaves on their faces; and big alewifes on 2 oz downlines (4) that pretty much constantly had leaves stuck on the sinkers pulling them way back
With the "great" weekend weather on the way - rain and winds 15-25 with gusts to 35 - decided I'd try and at least get some water time on Friday evening before it all went to crap.
Slid out on Thursday evening to net some ales in case getting gizzards proved a challenge on Fri / Sat or the weather caused issues. Got about 2 doz nice ales in the 1st toss and then ran around another hour or more looking for some others..... did get a few here and there but overall a waste of time.....
A waste of time because when I went out mid-day Friday during "lunch" I netted another 2 dozen ales that were even bigger and then 30-40 gizzards.
Can we say "over crowded"
Wrapped up the day and was on the water by 5pm and at my fishing hole by 5:20 or so. Heard reports of some crazy afternoon action going on - pre-frontal I figured - and just hoped there was a little left....
Got my spread out - things were a little slow to start. Finally got into one area and had all three baits up and running - had one board tugged hard but dropped it by the time I got the rod into my hand. Shortly another board got nailed and I hooked up on it - reached over to get the phone, fool around trying to take a pic which didn't really come out, and put the phone back and somewhere in there it came loose...... Oh well....
Had some nervous baits and even a few blow-ups an tugs along the way - but they just did not seem to want to eat. One did nail my back board with one of the biggest baits and this time I got it to the boat..... a "monster" 9 lber - didn't get a measurement but probably 31-32"
It started to sprinkle and I hoped it would turn on crazy-like but things went pretty quiet after that as dark began to set in..... called it quits just before 7pm
The bait tank was a little lighter - and the rain & wind is coming.....
I planned to hit the water at daylight on Saturday and hoped to get a few hours in before the winds got bad - figured I'd get wet regardless. Had the alarm set for 6:30 and something woke me up about 6:25. Looked at the radar - and sure enough the rain was here still.
I went ahead and got up - went into the bathroom and turned on the light switch. Nothing. No power.... which means no ability to get the boat into the water when its hanging in the lift..... got a text from a buddy just up the lake and he was also out of power - so much for fishing - or at least fishing before the wind came. Decided to go and get some breakfast at BoJangles about 7 - well, they had no power either - so I joined 20 others at the Duck-In who, as it turned out, only had power due to a generator -but bless their heart they got me a sausage & egg on wheat toast (all the biscuits were gone and no way to cook more). While I was waiting for my food the power came back on so I jumped back in the car and got home as quick as I could and got out on the water.
I like to "Bejewel" my filters You think 36 big Alewifes & 30 something gizzard were to much
With the late start I decided to fish some close-by creeks. Pulled my creek and just as I was about to quit I had a blow-up but it did not want to eat. Drug back and forth on that bank three times, with swirls and chases each time but no hits.... So I picked up and moved to another creek and pulled. And pulled, and pulled. And the wind started. And it blew, and blew, and blew.
Was thinking that this was all I was going to catch.... I was VERY tired of clearing leaves off my planers and pulling in baits to clear leaves off the bait / hooks.
Marked some stuff on the bottom which looked like fish in among the bait - but it may have just been big bait.... not sure - it didn't do anything to the bait I was dragging around...
I did see sign of life off one point with several baits getting chased and the 2nd time across the point as I was letting my outside planer pull a bit further out the fish grabbed the bait and ran. Hooked up and fought the fish to the boat - Not before he managed to get into the inside board on the other side of the boat too....
It put up a nice fight and turned out to be a 13 lb / 34" striper - nice fish which prevented a skunk for the day.
I fought the wind for probably another hour till around noon when better senses prevailed...... Not the weekend I was hoping for in terms of catching, but bait was caught and a fish came to the boat to be released each day - and given the crappy weather I'm not going to complain - If I'd fought the wind all day and tried a few more spots maybe I would have caught a few more, but I was nice and warm inside the movie theater watching "Fury" this afternoon
