Water: 60-62
Weather: Bluebird skies, winds at 10-15 from the N/NW until about 5pm and then they laid down
Techniques: Pulling big gizzards on freeline planers
Well, with a successful trip with the girls on Saturday accomplished, and 15-20 gizzards still in the tank, I decided I'd try for a three-peat and sleep in a bit and then hit the afternoon bite again on Sunday before heading home. Given the fish seemed to key in on the 12" gizzards yesterday, I headed back to the spots where I loaded up in hopes of culling out some big boys to put into the tank. The wind was blowing good with small white-caps in the main channel - and blowing more than I wanted to see where I was throwing the net. Sure enough, no bait on any of the spots where we'd caught them on Friday & Saturday and no flips to be seen with the wind blowing so hard.
I had enough to fish, but had a couple of hours before I figured I'd start, so I decided to keep looking. Finally found some and netted 12 in a throw, followed by another 4 more, and then a toss on a nearby dock provided a couple more and this 3 lb largemouth Only found one or two that were in that 12" range though.
I headed off to grab some lunch and then to fish an hour or so while I waited for our buddy Nathan to make it down to the lake a little before 4pm. Pulled boards with wind in my face through the area where we had good action yesterday - but not much going on today with the exception of maybe one weak chase. Turned around and dang if the wind did not turn at the same time - blowing in my face on the pull back About the time I was getting ready to pull the baits in to go get Nathan I had a couple of swirls on my middle bank-side board and then a hard tug on my biggest bait out the outside - it chased the baits for a few minutes then swam off.....
I ran over to pick up Nathan and hoped he brought some good luck with him. We fished the same general area, but a bit away from where I did the day before and earlier that morning - thinking perhaps the fish had moved a bit. We had not been pulling boards too long before some action showed itself and the big bait on an outside board that I had put a stinger hook on shoot backwards. I grabbed the rod, set the hook and it was "fish on" - good fight on this fish and the stinger did its job.... a skinny fish that only went 13 lbs but was 35.5" long
Kept on pulling - definitely not seeing the action we had the day before - not sure if the blue-bird skies or the front or what had them turned off. Finally had another board get hit next to me - I set the hook good, felt the fish on for about 5 seconds or so, handed the rod to Nathan who fought it for 10-15 seconds and then it spit out the bait, unfortunately not leaving a hook in its mouth in the process...
The wind finally laid down and it was a really nice late October evening to be pulling boards.... we had a few nervous baits here and there.... even got to see a fish nose a bait up on a board that was about 15 feet off the boat - saw the fish come up and swim all around that bait for several minutes but would never take it. Cool to see.....
Just before dark we decided to double back through the area where that fish was nosing up the bait - this time he, or another one, decided to eat..... thought it had come off as the fish was swimming hard and fast at the boat, but managed to stay hooked up and land this one too..... smaller one - almost a clone of the fish I caught on Sat evening - 29" and about 9 lbs.
Heck of a beautiful Fall weekend on the water and not a bad way to wrap up some Rockober fishing!
