Weather: started in the mid 40's, rose to upper 50's by lunchtime. Mostly blue-bird skies except for some scattered clouds which made the wind that much colder. The charts say the wind was not as bad today as the day before - and the big gusts were not there - but it sure seemed to bite more today....
Water: Decent visibility given a bunch of rain early/mid week. Temps from 64-66.
Techniques: Alewives on downlines, lightlines and freelined planers - big gizzards on free line planers - worked creek mouths & main-channel points
We used most of our gizzards on Saturday evening so I ran out after dinner to try and find some at the lights - hit three or four with no luck and the wind was still blowing so I decided to bail and that we'd fish alewives in the morning and target some smaller fish as the guys wanted to keep a few to take home to eat - told them if we put some in the 24-30" range we would keep a few.
We headed out at 1st light - right about 7 am - and made a beeline to the creek mouth where we had caught a few the morning before. Looked around with the sonar and we marked a few scattered fish here and there - enough that we decided to go ahead and put out a spread. Not too long into the pull we had a light-line get slammed but it did not hook up. Good sign though.... We pulled back across the mouth of the creek and I was just about to turn around when we started marking some decent # of fish....
Over the next 30 minutes or so we picked up 4 fish in the 5-9 lb range on a mix of downlines, light-lines, planers with ales and a planer with a money-maker gizzard, harvesting three of them for the guys to take back to Richmond.
The bite died off around 8:30, though we kept working the area for another hour or so.... at that point we decided to chase down a few more big gizzards and see if we could finish the morning with a repeat of Saturday evening. We located another half-dozen money-maker gizzards (thanks again for tossing that net Tyler), and we made a move - putting out a big spread of gizzards.
The wind was still tough - maybe not as gusty but seemed to be more steady today..... was wondering how long the trolling motor batteries were going to hold out. We set out a spread of gizzards - things felt slower and we had blue-bird skies bearing down - but we had a roll on a bait and then a bit later a board just got smoked. My brother-in-law grabbed the rod and started fighting the fish to the boat.... It was working him pretty good and he finally got the fish to the boat to where we could see it - looked to be around a 10 lb class fish - when it shook its head and threw the hook right at him. At least it wasn't a really stud - we're going to keep telling ourselves that at least. Things went dead after that so about 11:30 we called it, packed things in and headed to BayRoc to wrap-up a good weekend of fishing with some burgers & fries in classic SML style.
Sorry, forgot the pics of the burgers
