I am one of those folks from NC, I can tell you how many fish I have kept from the lake. None, not a one. Some times I put one in the live well just long enough to catch a second when the bite is good. Love a picture with two in it. I went fishing for a week in late Sept and caught zero stripers. Wind was up and it was one cold front after another. I did catch my biggest large mouth out there at a little over 6 pounds. I would love to come up for a day here in Oct but everytime I think about it the wind gets up. Plus I have no idea where to find them this time of year, I am use to fishing near the dam. Just wish there was striper fishing like you all have there close to home. Its close to a three hour drive for me and I cant tell you how many times I have come up for the day and spent the night in my truck just so I can try it agian the next am. Favorite time is still May love the night bite. Just wish I could figure out the whole live bait thing.

Something to consider before stereotyping people from certain states or certain clubs as all taking trophy fish out of the lake, and not respecting the fishery at SML. Some of the people from other states and other clubs do respect the fishery at SML, and release trophy fish. I do agree that there is some abuse of people not putting trophy fish back when it is not their home lake, or a lake that they have not worked hard to preserve the fishery, but not everyone from other states and other clubs are like that. It is sad that someone would keep a trophy fish, and not put it back in the water, but some people are going to be that way no matter what lake, state, or club they are in. It is my belief that most striper clubs that are Conservation Minded, (there are probably some that are not) will put a trophy fish back in the water to be caught another day. You guys have a great Striper fishery at SML, and unfortunately some people do not repsct the fishery you guys have worked hard to preserve, but some from other states and clubs, like myself, do respect what you all have done at SML. I just hope when I do get to go fishing up there, that I would not get the evil eye, just because I have a different state registration on my boat. Give some of us from other states and other clubs the benefit of the doubt until we prove otherwise. I understand the reason you posted what you did, and I admire your passion for the striper fishery at SML. I would ask that you not judge me by the state that my boat registration is for, but by who I am as a fellow striper fisherman.
You guys do a great job at SML, and it is a fishery and conservation effort to be modeled after! You guys also do a great job of communicating on this forum, because it is not like that on some of the other forums, so I appreciate all of your effort, and taking time to update the forums. It would be nice to get some of the neighboring state striper clubs together up at SML for some conservation work, or just and outing, so everyone could be educated on the striper fishery you all are doing a great job at preserving.

Good post NCstriper! We were definitely quick to judge - although we were given a lot of bad information so that didn't help. I've learned to just not give my opinion anymore on this type stuff because usually just end up coming across as an butthole so I'll just keep my mouth shut! Same with the fishery health issues - everybody has an opinion and we're all probably wrong. Passion is great, but I think its working against us here. I'm gonna keep it to the fishing and let it be what it is.

I'm gonna keep it to the fishing and let it be what it is. Bentrod, we need opposing opinions to guide our practices. To suggest that good science is the only means for making good decisions is just wrong. And I'm a scientist. The insane amount of variables and unknowns involved in managing a striper fishery equates to a "try this" or "try that" environment. However, common sense tells us that if you kill a 30+ inch fish, you have killed a fish that has a good chance to become a citation. You have also killed the size of fish that the fishery is currently trying to sustain. It is clear to me that moving a date around to match temperature fluctuations is not going happen at SML. Thus, a good and responsible practice for all fishermen would be to release all 30+ fish if they will survive. I say keep being a butthole Bentrod. I also say that we all police each other and ourselves for the sake of respecting and saving the future of our fishery.
