Before I catch shad I pump up water from 20-25ft down add a few cups of salt then fill up with a few dozen. When I hook my alewife through the mouth and out one nostril and lower to my depth 15-50 feet and it seems like my bait isn't staying alive longer then maybe 5-10 mins, what am I missing?

What part of the lake are you filling the tank from and what part of the lake are you fishing? If the bait isnfine in the tank and dying quick in the lake then I'd guess it's a thermocline issue. If dying in the tank or turning bad even if not totally dying then I might suspect the water being pumped up not having enough O2 - though a good pump / aerator will take care of that - unless you are not getting enough aeration into the tank.

Good point..... What speed are you pulling them? Thanks for the replies guys, I am filling my tank up with cold clean water right in front of the cliffs on bw, about 90 feet of water. Adding salt to tank, good aerator, filter, circulation. The ales seems to last 5 to 10 mins on downlines while in the anchored position with my terrova so I am not pulling them. Hooking them through the mouth out one nostril. |

Not sure - you may be fishing in an area where the thermocline is setup and down at that depth there is not enough O2 for the bait to live. That or you are thermal shocking them. I'm not familiar with where the thermocline sets up on the Blackwater side

I would drop a thermometer and a gopro down along with my alewife and find out for myself. I would then report back to the board with totally misleading information in an effort to confuse everything Bentrod has learned. Once I found that I had sufficiently made him mad, I would then state that I was just kidding and would hope that he doesn't steal my kid's brand new Spider Man Ugly Stick combo!
