Haven't been out in about a month, don't go too much in the summer. Couldn't resist a scouting trip with the overcast skies. Hoping to find some breaking fish. Hit BW around 5:00PM. Rode around for about 30 minutes before finding a small school. Got one on the 1st drop. Got back on the school and the next one took me in the trees and broke off. Lost the school, moved around and checked a few places and saw nothing on the screen. Went back near where the 1st school was, saw a couple on the screen so I dropped the trolling motor. Moved into 25ft of water and they were right on the bottom, hooked up right away. Drifting and fighting fish out to 38ft. deep. 4 drops in a row, fish on as soon as the jig got down. Drifted off the fish, pulled back up and got 3 more before it was time to head in. Fish went from 5-13lbs. Water temp was still 81. Never saw any breaking.

What were you jigging with? Headed out tonight with the flyrod on the roanoke side, hoping to find a few particularly stupid fish.

Greenmonster,I was using a 5/8 head with a fluke. I'll be hitting the Roanoke side soon, much closer to home.

Awesome. Thanks. Got a few flies that will resemble an ailwife, so hoping to hook up. Last few trips have been lots of hits, several hook ups and not a single landed fish. Comedy of errors and the worst streak of bad luck Ive had in a long time. Time to revive my superstitious routines (leave net at home, forego the go pro video efforts, abstain from bananas for 48 hrs, abandon flyfishing as primary fishing method).

I'm thinking the last of those may be your key Though I bet it is a blast to hook up with a good striper on a fly rod.

There are a few of us stupid enough to make something that is relatively difficult into something that is ridiculously impossible.
You can always spot them because they are generally malnourished, perpetually grumpy, often tangled up, and scream like girlie teenage rockband groupies on the rare occassions that they actually do manage to land something.
You really ought to try it. Its GREAT FUN.

When I get tired of catching them on regular tackle, then I might try a fly rod. But I'm a long, long way from getting tired of catching them, so it looks like you're going to have to catch for me.
