I've had luck catching em in 15 to 20 ft of water close to rock cliffs in major creeks.

The last few times I have been at SML, catching ales during the day has been quite a challenge on the Roanoke side. Each time I think I am on em, they end up being peanuts. But the nuts haves been catching real nice fish on light lines. Thus, I haven't searched like a maniac.
I am interested in learning where they hang during the day. At Anna, I have no problem finding herring during the day. They usually can be found on ledges in the mouths of major creeks. Hmmm...maybe this is the same for SML?

Hang on - I remember a video with someone talking about how they could catch ales during the day - oh yeah - that was during May Do you guys have Blueback or Alewifes on Anna? Check out this paper - (specifically page 12) www.nwrc.usgs.gov/wdb/pub/hsi/hsi-058.pdfAles like it cooler than Blueback. See those big schools of bait that are deep during the day during Summer on SML - there's your ales.... Usually ales will out fish "peanuts" this time of year but I know a number of folks that have had good success recently with "peanuts" - maybe it's due to cooler temps or perhaps more peanuts around or something - who knows.
