Recently moved back to town. I fish mostly saltwater from eastern Shore to OBX, mostly fish bottom, troll or throw plastics. So I am really just learning how to bait fish these schools at Smith... Went out 1:00am Saturday morning. We tried up the lake by the bridge with no luck. Ran out of bait quickly and couldn't find any to save my life... Got the plastics out and decided to take a run up to Blackwater around 5:00am. Before we got there we ran through a big school of fish, they started busting out of the water everywhere. (finally my kind of fishing...) Cut the motor and threw plastics for an hour or so chasing the school with the trolling motor. Site casting in 120 feet of water... not what I had planned that morning.... Caught 6, released 4 smaller ones, kept two big ones for the grill. They were moving fast, we finally lost the school. Wife broke off one nice one, blamed me for tying a bad knot. Saw one other boat near us, he was having a good morning also with several bait lines out.

Welcome and nice report. It's weird - I keep hearing about these reports of busting fish on the Blackwater but not seeing any on the a Roanoke side. You guys over there must have all our fish

Welcome, glad you had some luck, sometimes you have to change things to catch fish.

Thanks ! Looking forward to running the boat and getting ready for the Fall/winter fishing. Just rewired the entire boat, new fuse panel, pumps, FishFinder/GPS, switches, bilge, lights etc, etc... so just about ready to hit it. If you see a white bay boat, center console with NC numbers (VA numbers on the way) stop and say Hi and give me some bait. Ha !
