Weather: AWESOME! - low 60's rising into low 70's; humidity of negative percent. Partly cloudy giving way to clear - winds, light & variable to start, but picking up to 10-15 from NW as morning went on (OK, that part was not awesome)
Water: 83, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: Alewifes on downlines between 20 & 30' (4), ales on lightlines- mix of 3/8, 1/4 (4), ales on freelines (2), gizzards on freeline planers (1 or 2)
Nathan and I were going to take the boys fishing Thursday evening to kick off the 4th weekend, so I went and caught bait on Wednesday night - bait was slow coming into the lights and lightening ran me off before it got late enough to get some bigger ones, but I still had about 4 doz medium-ish to small-ish ales with a few bigger ones and 6 gizzards in the tank to settle in. Babied them through the next day with a partial water change and added salt around mid-day to combat the cloudiness / ammonia that was building - likely due to the mix of a 1/2 doz gizzards and the ales together
Mother Nature had other plans for our evening fishing trip.... so we re-planned for an early start to the 4th
Nathan and Ethan met us at 5:30a and we were out on the water a little after 5:45, fishing by 6, welcoming in an amazing July morning
Marked a few scattered fish in the mouth of a creek so we decided to put out bait and started pulling. The fish were holding mostly right around 20' with some down towards 30', over 40-60'. Worked the area a while and picked up 3 small fish. Picked up and moved down the lake a ways to try another spot - didn't mark as many but we stuck with it, picking up another small dink and then a more decent fish that went 4.5 lbs and 24". Nathan and Ethan had to be back at the dock around 9:30 so about 9 we moved back up the lake to the general area where we started the day - marked a few small pods of fish and picked up one more, that went 6 lbs and 26". Invited the 24" and 26" back for dinner Rest of the fish we caught were 18"-22" dinks, but the kids enjoyed catching them regardless.
The bite was split between the light-lines and down-lines - we had a gizzard come up on top one time but we didn't get any love from them.
