Hey guys, the weathers warm enough for me to get out and paddle now. I have really good luck drifting points but have been wasting my point jumps. I have decided to slow troll from point to point but I am lost as far a trolling goes. Im looking into planer boards but im unsure if they would be effective from my yak. Heres my question, I freeze shad through the winter and use it through the summer. But im wondering what a good lightweight rig for "cutbait". I can hook the shad to "swim" but have no idea of a good way to reach a good depth. I also will be trolling a 3 oz spoon and deep divers, but nothing gets the big girls like the real thing. Any ideas?

I have been fishing from my kayak for stripers in Kerr for a while now and have good success with planer boards with either no weight or some splitshot or rubber core weights. For targeting a specific depth I will put a sliding float and troll out the back or just go "old school" and use a down-line right off the boat. Do you have much luck with the frozen shad? I am planning on giving SML a try this year and any info you would be willing to share would be great. I have no idea on general areas to fish or where to put in. THX

SML! Upper ramps on either side of the lake spring and fall transitions! And I wouldn't even mess with shad if I had to use it dead! I would troll 3 way buck tails and spoons! Casting flukes at the same time!! Maybe tip a buck tail with a dead shad trolling! That buck tail will give that bait a little life!
Upper ramp= blackwater marina, hardy bridge, mormams, ponderosa, beaverdam, crafts church! Look at google earth and find good yak access! I know it's a few spots in the back of some of the creeks that would be hot spots. Like bull run standiford gills creek Indian creek!

You guys have MASSIVE cojones if you plan to kayak SML in the summer. Hope you have solid life saving equipment. Took my 18 foot bass boat out a few times last year and became absolutely swallowed out there. Be safe and good luck..this type of fishing has always intrigued me but I think Id chase the Stripers in The Staunton long before I hit the lake.

I know alot of these guys down frozen shad. But there is a proper process to freeze them. After 2 years of investigation I have found they will not bite dry frozen shad, plus hooking them is a joke. They must die in either in frozen water, or right at frozen. If not something happens and striper wont take them. Last year I caught an 18lb 38", a 20lb 37", and quite a few schoolies on frozen shad. They do work, maybe not to the extent of live shad. But they do work. And as far as yakin twards the main channel in full traffic goes, dont do it. Its terribly frustrating and a waste. I work the roanoke and the james river(flatties) pretty hard but only striper fish from a dock.
